Author of Barbaro Book Reflects on Barbaro's Passion and Popularity
Equestrian News Release
LEXINGTON, KY — February 2, 2007 — Sean Clancy, critically acclaimed author of the book Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America’s Heart, from Eclipse Press, reflected upon the saga and people surrounding the legendary Thoroughbred, speaking from his office in Fair Hill, Maryland on Thursday morning. The book chronicles the triumphant and ultimately tragic story of Kentucky Derby-winner Barbaro, who was euthanized earlier this week after an extensive and emotional attempted recovery from a life-threatening injury occurring in the 2006 Preakness Stakes.
Clancy, a horseman who is the editor/publisher of ST Publishing and has also written Saratoga Days and co-written The Best of the Saratoga Special, spent months researching and writing the engaging 192-page book which includes 100 memorable and moving photographs from racing’s best photographers. The hardcover book will retail for $25.95 and is scheduled for release in early April. The book is available for pre-order through http://www.ExclusivelyEquine.com.
Clancy commenting about Barbaro’s popularity:
“Barbaro’s ultimate destiny is especially difficult to accept because he was big and strong with this sort of invincible aura around him…and he was so charismatic. People love animals…they idolize athletes…and they cherish innocence. But they hate being let down by their heroes and, really, no matter what happened to Barbaro, he was never going to let anybody down, at least of his own volition.
“I don’t think it takes a lot for people to resonate with a horse…especially when you have an undefeated Kentucky Derby winner who breaks while trying to deliver a Triple Crown. It’s the perfect storm for emotion, connection, charity — all of the things that occurred with Barbaro’s story.”
Clancy commenting about Dr. Dean Richardson:
“My heart goes out to Dean Richardson who put so much of himself into this horse. He’s got to be feeling an emptiness that won’t ever be completely filled. The one thing that needs to be remembered about Richardson is, yes, he’s a surgeon but he’s also a teacher. He’s not just an equine surgeon running a private practice, he’s a teacher at a university trying to make a difference in student’s and horse’s lives. The teacher and the doctor in him have to be suffering.”
Clancy commenting about the forthcoming book, Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America’s Heart:
“Barbaro’s story has been told and re-told, but I hope people read this book and learn things they didn’t know, which furthers their respect for the horse and the sport. I hope my experience as a horseman comes through and opens a window into the sport that readers aren’t getting anywhere else. In the end, it comes down to one thing — the horse. People didn’t latch onto this particular story for any other reason than the individual horse. Barbaro did the heavy lifting. Hopefully after reading this book people won’t forget the vulnerability and passion he induced in his fans.”
