“Barn Boots and Baubles” Event a Success in Raising Awareness and Funds to Rescue Horses

Loxahatchee, FL- May 23- On Saturday, May 21, over fifty local horsemen and women gathered to raise money and awareness of the Florida Foal Rescue organization. The proceeds from the event went to Pure Thoughts, Inc. and the Florida Foal Rescue, which is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization. The one year old local organization has rescued over 316 foals, yearlings and mares from the slaughterhouse to date, and the event helped raise money to save even more horses from a horrible ending. Despite the inclement weather, people stayed for hours to support this worthy cause.
Jennifer Swanson, founder and director of Pure Thoughts, Inc., stated to the crowd, “I won’t talk about slaughter tonight. We all know what is happening. Instead, I want to talk about rescue and what we can do for these wonderful animals.” Their rescue efforts did not slow down because of the event; a four day old foal was being shipped down to Florida and was expected to arrive that night.
With the help and contributions of people and the community, they hope to save the lives of over 600 foals and yearlings this year. With enough financial support, the number is endless. There are over 28,000 foals and yearlings at high risk this year and contributions to the cause will help decrease that number.
There are a variety of ways that people can help these wonderful animals. There are opportunities for adoption and sponsorship of horses that are rescued. In addition, donations and membership will help provide for the horses that have been saved.
Many of the people who attended the event have already adopted a horse through Pure Thoughts; some had even taken two or three. Their assistance did not end at adoption, though. The event used a silent auction to raise money to support the horses that have not been adopted yet. Many of the horses need veterinary care, in addition to basic daily needs such as feed and bedding.
One donor to the silent auction was Henry Patton, an artist from Georgia. His beautiful animal portraits were a highlight of the event. Patton is also a representative of the American Horse Defense Fund, which joins the fight with Pure Thoughts to protect the equine species. Together they are working to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act to ban horse slaughter altogether.
Another guest at the event was Richard Schechter, owner of The Bainbridge Companies and Bainbridge Farms in Wellington, FL, and an avid horseman. Schechter has given enough money to save over 25 horses from slaughter and was honored along with many other guests at the event for his generosity.
Please help this worthy cause in their fight to save all equines from a cruel and unnecessary death.
