Cade McCutcheon Rides Dun Being An Okie to the SWRHA Futurity Short Stirrup Championship

Possibly the most exciting class of the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity Horse Show, the 10 & Under Short Stirrup class boasted eight highly qualified entries.
The winner of the class was 8-year-old Cade McCutcheon, who rode his horse, Dun Being An Okie, to the Championship. Their run, which earned a score of 70, featured great circles and smooth spins. “My horse was really good,” noted McCutcheon, who hails from Aubrey, Texas. “He’s one of my favorite horses. I guess I need to thank my family.”
McCutcheon has a great supporting cast – his mother, Mandy McCutcheon, and his father, Tom McCutcheon, are both National Reining Horse Association Million Dollar Riders. His grandfather, Tim McQuay, is a $2 Million Rider and his grandmother, Colleen McQuay, is also an acclaimed trainer in the hunter/jumper industry.
When asked who of his immediate family gives him the best advice, he gravely replied, “I don’t think I should answer that.”
McCutcheon’s partner for the event, Dun Being An Okie, nicknamed Okie, is highly connected to the McQuay/McCutcheon family. His sire, Hollywood Dun It, is an NRHA $5 Million Sire and Hall of Fame member, and was the headline sire for the McQuay family. Okie’s dam, Miss Okie Too, was shown by Mandy, before becoming one of the most beloved broodmares of the family and an NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee.
McCutcheon, who is actively involved in other sports, had only a short time to take an awards photo, and collect his plaque and Breyer Horse award, before rushing off to play in a football game.
Ben Wagman, of Talala, Oklahoma, was very excited about his Reserve score on Resting Banjoe. “I’ve never marked a 69 before,” he exclaimed, as he rode out of the arena.
Every 10 & Under Short Stirrup competitor was awarded a special Smart Chic Olena Breyer horse.
The SWRHA Futurity is held annually at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It runs from October 21-October 26, and boasts added money of over $135,000.
