Spanish Riding School Blog on EquiSearch.com

GAITHERSBURG, MD--A rare U.S. tour by the world’s oldest equestrian institution, the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, is the subject of a popular new web log or “blog” on EquiSearch.com, Primedia Equine Network’s award-winning website.

Created and updated by Fran Jurga, EquiSearch’s Spanish Riding School blog is a first for EquiSearch, which was recently redesigned and updated. Sponsored by Cross Country International and Albion Saddles, the blog follows 30 Lipizzan stallions and a troupe of riders from their headquarters in Vienna, Austria, through their six-city tour of the U.S., which ends December 11 in Houston.

The Lipizzans are performing in the U.S. to commemorate General George S. Patton Jr.’s rescue of the breed in the waning days of World War II 60 years ago.

The blog is updated almost every day, and news from the tour is posted immediately. Blog topics include details on the horses’ quarantine in New York, ages and bloodlines, facts about the history and characteristics of the breed, and a behind-the-scenes look at life and training inside the Spanish Riding School. Jurga also presents a list of 10 great books about the legendary institution and its horses. “Whether you are a dressage devotee, a vulture for Viennese culture, or a history buff with an interest in World War II and General Patton, you’ll find all the facts and all the fun here,” says Jurga.

Jurga is a freelance writer who also publishes Hoofcare and Lameness Journal. She traveled to Vienna last summer, where she immersed herself in the history of the Spanish Riding School and spent time at the breed’s federal stud at Piber in southern Austria.

In addition to creating and maintaining the EquiSearch blog, Jurga wrote about the Lipizzans and General Patton’s rescue of the breed in the November issue of EQUUS magazine. Her research in Vienna uncovered never-before-published facts about Patton’s personal relationship with the Lipizzans and the School.

Check out EquiSearch.com for details—and be sure to read hunter equitation rider Natalie Johnson’s hot new blog about her adventures in Syracuse at the National Horse Show ASPCA Maclay National Finals presented by Bates Australia. Johnson is one of the subjects of an upcoming Animal Planet television show on the Maclay Finals (premiering Feb. 1 at 8 p.m.).

Founded in 1995, EquiSearch attracts more than 210,000 unique visitors each month with its searchable articles on horse care, farm and ranch management, riding/training, and more. The site is produced by Primedia Equine Network, publisher of EQUUS, Practical Horseman, Horse & Rider, Dressage Today and Arabian Horse World magazines.

How to blog: A blog is simply an informal web-based journal that employs image files and links to other blogs or web addresses to create a mesh of information. Most recent posts by the author appear at the top of the blog page, and the reader literally reads the journal backward in search of information or links.
