Using Technology to Get Results Faster

Recent technological developments have made mare breeding faster and more efficient than ever before. Many of the techniques and tools that were originally designed for infertility treatments are now being used for healthy ovulating mares. The main advantage of course is faster pregnancy achievement. They are also great for long distance mating. The main drawback has to do with commitment and monetary issues. You want to discuss your options with your vet, and make sure to budget in the added vet bills that are likely to accumulate from some of these procedures.

Here are just some of the things that have taken the horse breeding industry by storm.

Ultrasounds- this quick and inexpensive test uses sound waves to get an internal picture of your mare’s reproductive tract. They can be used pre and post conception to find out the status of your mare. Most vets can validate a pregnancy within 13-15 days of conception, which can shave almost a week off the typical waiting period. This allows you to make arrangements for a subsequent cycle if you so desire. Such technology can also help pinpoint twin pregnancies- which can be lethal for both foals and mare.

Frozen sperm- technological advances have made freezing and transporting sperm more efficient than ever. The majority of the specimen will arrive at its destination in perfect condition, thus increasing the chances for a successful pregnancy. Using frozen sperm allows you to breed your mare with any stallion in the country, and distance is no longer an issue.

Hormone therapy- the medical community has come a long way in dealing with hormone replacement therapy. Such treatments can be used to help combat frequent miscarriages, earlier breeding, and infertility. You can discuss your options with your vet. This may include estrogen, progesterone, and various other hormone replacements.

Embryo Transfers- even infertile mares may be able carry a foul to term with the help of embryo transfers. You will need to find a vet that is able to handle such a procedure, and you can expect to spend several thousands of dollars should the procedure be needed. Basically, the vet or lab will take all of the guess work out of the conception process combining the mares egg with the stallions sperm and then transplanting it all back into the mare when fertilized. Continual monitoring will need to place for such a procedure.

Artificial Insemination- using both fresh and frozen sperm. Any given breeding cycle a mare has a 50% chance of conception. Artificial Insemination (AI) increases that chance by 10-15%. The process is quick and fairly simple, and is an easy way to help increase your chances for a successful pregnancy. This is also useful when the mare and stallion are in different parts of the country.

It is important to remember that every situation is different, and you should discuss your options with your vet. The overall fertility condition of the mare and stallion will take precedence and help lead you in the right direction. Early medical intervention will help ensure the health and safety of the horses involved, and will hopefully give you a foal quicker than you may have imagined.
