First-Ever School-Wide Read of Horse Book

An entire high school will read a book about horses? That's right. This year, Dunnellon, FL High School is going to read a memoir, "Healed By Horses," by author and horse trainer Carole Fletcher. The autobiography is a gripping story of how, after years of recovering from a near-death accident with second and third degree burns over 65% of her body, her horses gave Carole the will to live.
The reading team at Dunnellon High School, headed by Reading Coach Danielle Beasley, determined that the issues covered in this inspiring book, published by Atria/Simon and Schuster in 2005, were precisely what adolescents face daily: body image, the meaning of true courage and strength, and the will to overcome any of life's obstacles. The book's vocabulary was deemed appropriate for students of high-school age as well. The school hopes to promote literacy and maintain their already-high FCAT scores through reading this book. Additionally, Ms. Fletcher will bring her famous trick horses to the school to meet and greet the students and staff.
"Healed By Horses" has received the endorsements of notable horsemen such as John Lyons, Ray Hunt and Bruce Davidson. It was co-written by Lawrence Scanlan, who has written six books about horses. The book's jacket quote, by Roy Rogers Jr. says:
"What a beautiful book, full of hope in times of deep despair, and the realization of the unconditional love and sensitivity that comes from God's gift to humans--horses!"
