What Do You Do When Your Horse Has a Personality Complex? Answers from Dr. Ward!

AUSTIN, Texas February 15, 2008 –When a horse transforms from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde it can cause a stressful relationship with their rider; however, Dr. Madalyn Ward D.V.M., gives readers the tools to form healthy connections in her new book, “Horse Harmony, Understanding Horse Types and Temperaments.”

Using Traditional Chinese Medicine as her resource, Dr. Ward developed 11 basic horse types and temperaments. The Five-Element Personality approach is based upon the idea that humans and animals have a ‘constitutional type,’ these are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. She describes the personality as well as the best training, job, diet and management method for each.

Sometimes a horse can be a combination of two. These horses are often more difficult to manage or train than single trait types and can have a conflicting personality. For example, the primary emotion of the Wood horse is anger while the Fire horse is joyful. The Wood horse is best handled with firmness but the Fire horse needs plenty of praise to stay motivated. When you combine the characteristics of these two types into a single horse, you get a horse with a deep and often complex personality. What can an owner do when their horse seems to be impossible?

Dr. Ward discusses the combination horse in her book, providing insight on creating a safe and healthy relationship with the animal, so that a perfect bond can be formed. A concerned owner can find answers to questions about the laid-back horse to the very high-strung and every personality in between. Her book is perfect for the equine enthusiast who is searching for the perfect mount or those who would like to improve their relationship with the horse they have.

Dr. Ward is the owner of Bear Creek Veterinary Clinic in Austin, Texas. She is the author of several books and the publisher of the monthly newsletter, “Holistic Horsekeeping.” For more information on her book, “Horse Harmony, Understanding Horse Types and Temperaments,” visit http://www.horseharmony.com.
