The Humane Society of NY Raises Over $300,000 for Rescue Center at Art Auction

The Humane Society of New York's President Virginia Chipurnoi and HSNY Honorary Director and avid horsewoman Cornelia Guest welcomed guests at the Baryshnikov Arts Center who came to support the animals and bid on the 175 photographss donated by everyone from Madonna to Bruce Weber to Bruce Springsteen on Monday, April 16. The event, which offered bidding at the auction and online at http://www.humanesocietyny.org, raised more than $300,000 for those served by the HSNY, which was started over 100 years ago to help the city's horses.

Thanks to the efforts of VPs Mrs. Benjamin A. Groves and Jade Hobson, Honorary Chairs Tony Bennett and Elliott Erwitt and Committee Members such as Frances Hayward, Jackie Rogers, Dylan Lauren and Devon Aoki who lent their support, more than 300 guests including Vogue's Alexandra Kotur, Aldon James Jr., Ann Caruso, Whitney and James Fairchild, Alison Minton, Peri Wolfman and CeCe Cord and her little terrier Tiger braved the nor'easter and enjoyed the amazing photographs, the fabulous vegetarian fare created by Andrea Correale's team at Elegant Affairs, and bid on the amazing prints that included everything from roaring tigers to sultry models.

Rick Wester of Philips de Pury and Company and Cornelia Guest led the live auction while guests placed bids on photographs of Marlene Dietrich donated by the Milton H. Greene Archives that was chosen by Life as one of "The 60 Most Influential Photographs of the Century", a never-before-seen photograph from an unreleased Frank Sinatra album by the late Ed Thrasher, as well as a shot of Cornelia's mother CZ Guest called "The Good Life" by Slim Aarons.

Those who could not make it to the auction like Ivanka Trump, placed bids over the phone.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, who donated a photograph and the space for the auction, also made an appearance at the auction, taking time to greet guests and donors and spend some special time on the steps unobtrusively asking questions and cuddling with Lady and GiGi, two 10-week-old terriers mix puppies that are up for adoption. Photographers abounded with Lynn John St.

John, Elliott Erwitt, Rowland Scherman, Roberto Dutesco, George Holz, Sylvia Plachy and Arnaud Durieux all chatting and admiring each other's work.

Janna Bullock, whose friend Vlada Krassilnikova donated and hand-delivered a print before returning to Europe, Valesca Hermes, Douglas Hannant and Frederick Anderson, Lauren Ezersky, Ann Caruso, Dan Peres and his wife, 24 star Sarah Wynter, Harriette Rose Katz and Michele Gerber Klein checked out the art while the well-dressed catering staff passed delicious hors d'oeuvres of Moroccan Cigars, Tuscan Frittatas, Walnut and Brie Tarts and more, all of which was complimented by a variety of white wine, champagne and Barking Dog Ale. Chico and Chloe, two other canine guests, took time from their busy schedule as the stars of Broadway's upcoming Legally Blonde musical to enjoy the evening with their trainer Bill Berloni.

Due to the overwhelming demand and time limitations, the Humane Society of New York's Fine Art Photography Auction was extended online until midnight on Thursday, April 19. One hundred percent of the proceeds will help the over 32,000 animals depending on the HSNY's veterinary clinic and adoption center each year.
