Equestrian News Release
WELLINGTON, FL (December 19, 2005) – Ten teams, including defending champion Lechuza Caracas as well as four new teams, have entered the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup, the initial tournament of the 2006 season at International Polo Club Palm Beach, the premier polo club in the United States.
The tournament begins on Sunday, January 15 at 3 p.m. with the final scheduled for Sunday, January 29 at 3 p.m.
Victor Vargas’ Lechuza Caracas defeated Millarville 13-10 to capture the 2005 title. This year’s team will feature 10-goaler Sebastian Merlos and 5-goalers Tomas del Rio and Gaston Urturi, last year’s MVP, along with Vargas.
The four new teams are led by New Bridge La Dolfina, featuring 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso, generally acknowledged as the best player in the world. Cambiaso, in 1993 at the age of 17, became the youngest 10-goaler in the history of the sport. The five-time U.S. Open champion turns 31 on April 14. He is joined by 9-goaler Matias Magrini, 3-goaler Gonzalo Del Tour and patron Russ McCall.
The other new teams are Al Micallef’s Reata, led by 10-goaler Agustin Merlos and 8-goaler Sapo Caset Jr.; Franck Dubarry’s Techno Marine, led by 9-goaler Adam Snow and 7-goaler Luis Escobar; and Marc Ganzi’s Audi, led by 8-goaler Hector Galindo.
The remaining teams include Peter Orthwein’s Airstream, with the powerful combination of 10-goaler Carlos Gracida and 9-goaler Memo Gracida; Scott Devon’s Catamount, led by 8-goaler Jeff Hall; and Skeeter Johnston’s Skeeterville, led by 8-goalers Owen Rinehart and Julio Arellano.
Pony Express, led by 7-goaler Nicolas Roldan, and Scott Wood’s ERG round out the field.
Catamount won the 2004 title as Carlos Gracida earned MVP honors. The tournament was first played in 2003 as an 18-goal event and won by La Herradura.
The Joe Barry Memorial Cup is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated polo in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
