Hands across the border: Canadians and Americans join forces to save an Icon of the Plains

TORONTO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Wild horses thundering across the open plains has long been a living symbol of the American spirit. This past December Congress took action which largely eliminates the protection from slaughter that these mustangs have had by law. The congressional action was a tiny detail slipped into the massive appropriations bill, with no public attention or debate.

Now that the issue is public, many people are outraged. Letters and emails are bombarding legislators; CBS, NBC, and the New York Times have covered the subject. Janet Burts is a woman who's not an activist - she's someone determined to find a solution to an important dilemma.

Janet lives in Alaska, she's a mother of three, author of Alaskan Safari, and has raised many horses. She sought out a 'horse whisperer' in Canada, Randy Bird, and asked if it was possible to train wild horses, domesticate them - train a lot of them, so that there would be an alternative to killing them. Randy said yes, he could do that, and a partnership began. A documentary film company, Primitive Pictures, came into this group. A project was born, and it begins now.

Janet, Randy, and their documentary partners are in the process of buying twenty wild horses in Wyoming. They'll begin the slow, patient process of calming these often violent animals, and then they'll take them to Randy's farm in Ontario, Canada. Two at a time, the horses will be trained, and many people will be invited to enjoy and adopt these spirited animals.

There are many horse trainers and many people concerned about vanishing American values. This is a unique story of action and determination. The commitment of Janet, Randy, and the documentary production team is rooted in the problem Congress created by the measure secretly inserted into the appropriations bill. Now the Bureau of Land Management, the agency in charge of managing all this, must decide what to do. Janet, Randy and all in the production team respect this task. It is formidable and controversial. Their effort will follow this, and contribute a solution.

It's gratifying to all involved in this that it's a cross-border effort, at a time when many in the United States and Canada will welcome a worthy effort from people in two great nations.
