Argentina's Jorge Zamudio Has Biggest Win of Career Taking WEF Challenge II
Equestrian News Release
WELLINGTON, Fla., Jan. 15--Argentina's Jorge Zamudio on Phelox had the biggest win of his career when he captured the WEF Challenge II at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center Thursday.
Zamudio was one of only three combinations who started the first round to make it to the jumpoff. The other two were Todd Minikus of Wellington, Fla. and Olinda and Charlie Jayne of Elgin, Ill., and Gangsta.
Minikus was the first to go in the jumpoff, but pulled a rail for four faults.
Relying on advice from his "good friend" Eric Lamaze to "go for it," Zamudio said he did just that knowing that Jayne and Gangsta coming right behind him would have to ride a fast round and make no mistakes.
"That's what we did and it worked," said the 36-year-old Zamudio who spent 10 years in Europe before moving to the U.S.
Jayne and Gangsta also dropped a rail. Minikus finished second and Jayne third.
Zamudio had high praise for his sponsor, Lillian Stransky, and Erika Morales, owner of the 10-year-old Phelox, to work out an arrangement that has enabled him to compete the horse for the past year.
