Top Notch Junior Rider Katherine Newman Advances to Professional Ranks

Wellington, FL - January 7, 2009 - Allwyn Court's Katherine Newman started off the new year with an exciting career change, transitioning from the junior ranks to that of a young professional in the hunter/jumper industry. Eighteen-year-old Newman of Wellington, FL, has won countless ribbons and awards as a junior at the very best equestrian competitions in the country. She and her parents, Kathy and Gerry, own Allwyn Court, a hunter/jumper show stable based in Wellington.

In August of 2007, the young rider triumphed at the CN North American Junior and Young Riders' Championships in Lexington, VA, where she won the prestigious individual gold medal. In 2008 she won the renowned Washington International Horse Show Equitation Classic Finals. She has had major wins at the Capital Challenge Horse Show, The Hampton Classic, the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Devon Horse Show, and successful shows in Upperville, VA, Lexington, KY, Traverse City, MI, Wayne, IL, and Lake Placid, NY, to name a few.

"I had some great experiences as a junior," said Newman, "and I got to ride some amazing horses and ponies. Some of most memorable accomplishments are being Grand Pony Champion at Devon, Champion in the Large Juniors at Devon, winning the [International] Hunter Derby at Devon, winning the WIHS Equitation Finals, winning the Gold Medal at Young Riders, and having two clear rounds in my first Grand Prix."

"I've decided to turn professional because it will give me the opportunity to ride more horses," she explained. "Also, I've always known that this is the career path I want, so it makes the most sense for me to turn professional now."

At shows, Newman is currently competing in the Pre-Green Hunter division with Aljano Jr. for Mary Anne Choi. She is also showing Chellapo Z for Mimi Abel-Smith and catch-riding horses for other riders and trainers. "I hope to do some 1.40m and 1.45m classes with Chellapo Z during WEF," she said. "My biggest goal for this year is to start showing him in the Grand Prix."

Newman will be competing and catch-riding at the Winter Equestrian Festival, and she will later travel to Virginia, Kentucky, and Michigan during the summer months.
