Katie McDermott Tops 2008 NRCHA Derby Youth Limited
Equestrian News Release
The youth competition got off to a great start at the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby June 17-22 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.
Earning the Youth Limited Championship was Katie McDermott and Will You Miss Me. Katie and Will You Miss Me scored a 434 to earn $255.
The Solvang, California, teenager had her eye on Will You Miss Me from the very beginning. Now 14, she often visited the babies born at John and Shannon McCarty’s Hollister Ranch in Gaviota, California, and at the ripe old age of 9, she saw Will You Miss Me, a little bay filly. Four years later, Katie was the proud owner of the horse.
“The fact the she’s my horse now when she was always my favorite is really cool,” Katie said after her win. “She just has a “people” personality. She’s a friendly horse to be around, and all she does is try. She really takes care of me and forgives me when I mess up.”
Katie has been riding reined cow horses for three years now, and says the competition today was the best run she’s ever had.
“She stops amazing,” Katie said of Will You Miss Me. “I was excited to have a stop like she did today period, let alone have it happen at a show. That was pretty neat.
Coming in second was Cory Massey of Kingsburg, California, and Hickorys Mr Chip, by Mister Dual Pep and out of Lil Hickory Chip. Massey and Hickorys Mr Chip, who is owned by the Ward Ranch, won $212.
The night before the youth competition, all the younger members of the association got together for a quick meeting and a hoop shoot contest. Of course, when it came time for the basketball action - the young at heart became actively involved.
The first NRCHYA elections are slated to be held at the 2008 NRCHA World Show held February 2009 in San Angelo, Texas.
