NBC Television Special to Feature Jacksboro Resident

Robbie Boyce to host show about American Quarter Horses

Amarillo, Texas, December 12, 2005 – American Quarter Horse Association Professional Horseman Robbie Boyce of Jacksboro, Texas, will serve as the analyst for the Ford/AQHA Western World Championships presented by Fort Dodge. The show airs January 8 on NBC Sports Television at 4 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Pacific. The one-hour special is based at the AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City and highlights the reining and cutting competitions along with other features.

“Robbie’s insight will complement this exciting show,” said Bill Brewer, AQHA Executive Vice President. “NBC Sports has made great strides in expanding its programming to include more equestrian events, and we’re excited to have Robbie represent our industry.”

Boyce, who began showing as a youth, has been an exhibitor at the AQHA World Show since 1997 and has been a finalist in reining and working cow horse competitions. This year, he finished third in junior working cow horse. He also has appeared on “America’s Horse,” AQHA’s weekly television series on the TVG Network (tvg.com). Veteran sports announcer Tim Ryan and former jockey-turned reporter Donna Brothers also are a part of the NBC team.

Cutting and reining – two of the most popular and growing events – will have a dominant presence in the show. Cutting, the two-and-one-half minute battle of horse versus cow will feature the junior competition for horses aged 5 years and younger. In cutting, horses must keep a single cow away from the herd. Cutting horses must stay one step ahead of the cow, using fast reflexes and quick moves.

Reining, which has been compared to figure skating because of required maneuvers, will highlight the senior competition for horses aged 6 years and older. Reining horses perform sliding stops, fast circles and precise spins, showcasing the American Quarter Horses’ athletic ability. Already adopted by the United States Equestrian Federation and the Fédération Equestre International (FEI), reining is heading toward Olympic approval.
