2009 NRCHA Derby Finalists Decided
Equestrian News Release
The field of 117 Open entries at the 2009 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby was narrowed to twenty after a grueling round of competition at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California. Over the first four days of the show, top 4- and 5-year-old cow horses vied for a slot in the clean-slate finals on Sunday, June 21, where the Open Champion will be awarded a check for $45,866.
Leading the Open field advancing to the finals is Todd Bergen, who piloted Nics Black Diamond (Nic It In The Bud x Shinersdiamondjackie) to a 652.5 composite for Mark and Kelly Gowing. Bergen, who is an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider, also made the finals on Lights R Red (CD Lights x Genuine Redbud), who is owned by Eric Storey.
The top 20 advanced to the Open finals, with the bubble score at 643. The magic number for the 13 Intermediate Open riders plus ties who also earned a finals berth was a 631.5. Advancing to the Limited Open finals took a score of 611.
Eric Freitas topped the Non Pro division leader board on Travelin Cielo, the horse he rode to the Non Pro title just two months earlier at the NRCHA Hackamore Classic. Freitas and the Travalena stallion, out of Powderedsugar, had a 645.5 composite in the preliminary round.
It took a 627 in the Non Pro division to earn a finals berth, and the top six Intermediate Non Pro riders advanced to the finals with a bubble score of 622.
The NRCHA Derby, which began on June 16, is held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.
