Palm Beach County Horseman’s Association Donates to Animal SOS Fund for Hurricane Katrina Victims

Wellington, FL- October 5- The Palm Beach County Horseman’s Association made the decision yesterday to donate money to the Animal SOS Fund. The hunter jumper circuit that is based in Palm Beach County has said that members and staff have donated a portion of their salary. The money was sent right away to help the Animal SOS Fund in their quest to save and feed equines, dogs, and cats that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.

In addition to the donation sent this week, PBCHA will send more money after their October 29-30 horse show. The money earned from entry fees for certain divisions will be donated, as well as money collected from donation boxes set up in the horse show office.

PBCHA is sending the money to help the animals that are stranded in the ravaged areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. The Animal SOS Fund was started by grand prix riders Kim Burnette-Mitchell and her husband Dennis, as well as their friend Dutch Pete. They have been driving into remote Gulf Coast areas with their horse truck and trailer full of feed for animals and horses. After delivering these much needed supplies, their trailer also serves as a transport for all animals to safe havens of farms and vets that are offering assistance. They, along with a number of friends, have already fed and saved the lives of hundreds of starving animals.

The Animal SOS Fund is also working with local farms to get feed and medical supplies to the people and animals on the Gulf Coast.

“What started as a few people doing what they can has grown into a large network of people driving semi trucks filled with supplies into the area,” said Burnette-Mitchell.

Dutch Pete has made over twenty trips to the Gulf Coast region. “We continue to supply hay and feed to the folks, and we are now adding veterinary supplies to our list of deliveries,” Burnette-Mitchell reported. “With the support of Farmvet.com, we have been able to take down medications and various supplies that horse owners and volunteers are desperate for.”

She added, “The donations have been phenomenal. We feel we have the resources to purchase the necessary feed and supplies to impact the area. Our job is still in the beginning stages, and we have a lot more to do. We have all become consumed with this project. We need your continued support!”

While the Animal SOS Fund will happily accept any supplies such as wormers or fly spray, what they need most is money to buy hay, feed, dog food, and cat food.

The PBCHA features three rings of competition on the world-famous show grounds that host the annual Winter Equestrian Festival every winter. The shows are becoming more and more popular for equestrians that live in South Florida. Many professionals also enjoy coming to the PBCHA shows to give their young horses and riders experience at a large facility.

The PBCHA was founded in 1968. They are dedicated to the promotion and rewarding of quality horsemanship, sportsmanship, and fair competition in the disciplines of hunters, equitation and jumpers.

The next show for the Palm Beach County Horseman’s Association will be held on October 29-30. For more information on the show, please visit their website, at http://www.pbcha.org, or email them at pbchainfo@aol.com.
