PRCA Bull Rider, Akin, in Critical Condition
Equestrian News Release
PRCA bull rider, Lee Akin, was taken to Baptist Hospital in Montgomery, AL, on March 8, 2007 after being bucked off and stepped on by Smith, Harper and Morgan’s, Dick Dasterdly, during the Southeastern Livestock Exposition and Rodeo in Montgomery, AL.
Akin, of Weatherford, OK, suffered a skull fracture after the bull stepped on the left side of his head upon hitting the ground. The Justin Sports Medicine Team was immediately on the scene and assisted in transporting Akin to Baptist Hospital where they determined he had a traumatic brain injury. He underwent successful neurosurgery and is currently in an induced coma in the critical care unit. An induced coma with this severe of an injury is very common and it allows the body to relax and recover more quickly.
Stock contractors, Stace Smith and Pete Carr, sent their personal plane to pick up Akin’s family in Oklahoma, so that they could be with him in Montgomery.
