The Inner Life of Skipper the Horse

LENEXA, Kan., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Orion N. Lewis take a unique view as he describes life from his horse's eyes as the horse was successfully trained in his new book, "Skipper" (now available through AuthorHouse).

The book consists of human-like observations from the author's horse, Skipper, including various thoughts in verse form. Skipper narrates his experiences with training and the various people he meets and interacts with on the farm. His perspective provides unique insights into the mind of a horse. "Horses, much like people, respond to apparent or possible danger by fight or flight," says Lewis. "Skipper is a good book on the basics of gaining the trust and confidence of the horse from birth to the finished cattle- working horse."

In addition to offering methods for teaching the different facets of cattle work, Skipper highlights Lewis' life during the Depression and his experiences training horses as a boy. "This became necessary when cotton prices dropped to 5 cents a pound, which caused [my] family to lose [our] farm tractor and equipment ... The family, as did many others, had to revert to horse-drawn equipment if [we] were to continue farming."

Comprised of poetry and prose with a bit of theology added into the mix, Skipper uses a unique and entertaining format to impart valuable information about history and horse training. "The work of a horse and rider who truly trust each other can become a masterpiece," writes Lewis.

Lewis grew up on a ranch near Three Rivers, Texas, where he learned to love horses, cattle and dogs. He served in the U.S. Air Force in North Africa, Arabia and China during World War II. After the war ended, he became a Methodist minister and served as a pastor in several Texas communities. He retired at age 65 and moved with his wife to Wellsville, Kan., where he trained horses, taught riding lessons, ministered and farmed. His wife of 59 years died in 2001, and he married his present wife in 2004. "Skipper" is Lewis' first book, and he is currently working on a second.
