Tobasco Tops the Charts in the Small Junior Hunters 15 & Under at Winter Equestrian Festival
Equestrian News Release
Wellington, FL – February 13, 2006 – After snowstorms blanketed the northeast, Alexandra Thornton of Bedminster, New Jersey was unable to attend week three of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. Thornton and trainer Susan Humes asked Jennifer Waxman, who trains with Ken and Emily Smith at Ashland Farm, to pilot Thornton’s horses during the weekend’s competition.
“Jen is one of the most talented junior riders I’ve ever seen,” stated Susan Humes. “She has trained with Ken and Emily Smith since she started riding, and they’ve done an amazing job with her. She rides like a little professional and is a pleasure to work with.” Humes added, “She is always smiling, gracious, and very polite. We really appreciated her help this weekend.”
Waxman collected two championships in the Junior Hunters. Tobasco, owned by Alexandra Thornton’s farm Dunwalke, earned two blues in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under division, as well as a second, third, and fourth. The duo’s ribbons won them the Small Junior 15 & Under Championship.
Tobasco is a new addition to Dunwalke and was recently given to 13 year old Thornton as a birthday gift. She had captured a championship the first week of the Winter Equestrian Festival with Tobasco in the Children’s Hunter 14 & Under division and will compete with the new ride at the Bainbridge Florida Classic WCHR Hunter Spectacular, week four of the Winter Equestrian Festival.
Jennifer Waxman also rode Saloon to the championship in the Large Junior Hunter 15 & Under division. Saloon, owned by Whitney Roper, was brought along as an unproven hunter by Susan Humes in 2001. Saloon proved himself in 2002 as the Regular Working Hunter Champion at the Winter Equestrian Festival and as Roper’s partner during such prestigious competitions as the indoor shows in Harrisburg and New York and the National Horse Show and Family Festival in Wellington, Florida.
Waxman also rode Thornton’s Large Pony, Cherrybrook’s Blue Suede Shoes, and her Children’s Hunter Agincourt. Thornton will return to Wellington, Florida this week to compete with the large pony, Agincourt, and Tobasco. She will also show Dunwalke’s For the Music in the Children’s Hunter division and make her debut in the Jumper arena with Saint-Expury in the schooling jumpers.
