Winter Equestrian Festival Delivers $57 Million

Wellington, Fl. May 11, 2005 A study just completed for the PBC Tourist Development Council shows that stable owners, and those who take care of their horses, spent $57, 385,000 this spring in Palm Beach County at the Winter Equestrian Festival using over 85,000 paid accommodation nights in the process.
“The Festival, which ran from January 26 to March 13, 2005, is our most lucrative event,” said Charles Lehmann, executive director of the TDC. “Almost 20,000 hotel room nights, 39,000 rented condo nights, and 27,000 campground nights were used.
As with most PBC visitors, the most frequent diversions were restaurants, shopping and the beach.

According to Pam Gerig-Bland, executive director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, the Festival is known world wide in equestrian circles, attracting competitors and equestrian interests internationally. She noted that this event enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors by bringing world class competitors to Wellington.

Caren Hunter, Director of Business and Sponsorship Development, Stadium Jumping, Inc. said. “This independent study has proven to be extremely helpful in determining the extraordinary dollars that the equine business brings to Palm Beach County every year. We believed prior to the study that the Winter Equestrian Festival generated upwards of $50 million dollars into the county each year and this study proves that we bring in even more.”

These figures were compiled by Profile Marketing Research, the agency under contract with the TDC, during the spring event at a cost of $6,000. More then 200 interviews were conducted with exhibitors, vendors and other support personnel that included veterinarians, farriers, media, and feed sales.
