The 122nd National Horse Show & Family Festival Hosts Ladies Hunter Side Saddle Championship
Equestrian News Release
Wellington, FL – November 8- The 122nd National Horse Show & Family Festival will be held at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, FL, from November 30 through December 4, 2005. An annual equestrian tradition since 1883, this event showcases top hunter, jumper, and dressage competitors at their highest levels. Along with some of the nation’s top hunter and jumper riders, this event hosts the National Championship of Ladies Hunter Side Saddle.
The Side Saddle competition held at the National Horse Show is composed of three classes: the Under Saddle, the Over Fences, and the Hunter Hack. The Under Saddle class is scored 75 % on performance and 25% on formal hunt appointments. The appointments include detailed equipment and attire that reflect historical fox hunt requirements and traditions.
The Over Fences class, similar to the Hunter discipline, is judged upon the horse’s performance, suitability, manners, jumping form, consistency, and pace over a course 3 feet in height. The Hunter Hack has a walk, trot, and canter section followed by a jumping portion over two 2’6’’ fences. After negotiating the two fences, competitors must hand gallop and then bring their horse to a halt. The walk, trot, and canter portion determines 50% of the rider’s score, while the other 50% is scored upon their jumping performance.
Side Saddle originated as a way for women to enjoy fox hunting with their husbands. At that point in time, it was considered “uncouth” for ladies to ride astride, and women were required to wear attire proper for hunting. Traditionally, solid colored horses were used for fox hunting, and geldings were considered the most even tempered.
In the show ring, Side Saddle horses must have the appropriate appointments. Horses must have their mane and tail braided, and their bridles must be made of flat leather. Reins are to be stitched directly to the bit, and flat leather breast plates are generally used. Older saddles from the early 1900’s are the most popular among side saddle riders. These saddles need a three fold girth with a balance strap to keep the saddle in place, and they also have a break away safety stirrup. Two pommels provide hooks for the riders’ leg during either flatwork or jumping, and the bottom of the saddle is lined with either canvas or linen.
Women’s attire includes a black silk top hat, a black veil to cover the face, hair styled in a bun, a white long sleeved shirt, pants that match the habit, a black or navy blue wool cutaway habit with two buttons angled away from the waist, a canary yellow or plaid vest, brown leather gloves, a belt that doubles as a stirrup leather, a skirt called an “apron,” black dress boots, and a four fold stock tie with a three inch gold pin. Historically, the stock tie doubled as a sling or a bandage in case of an injury during a hunt, with the pin holding the bandage in place.
Riders are allowed to wear pearl stud earrings or diamond stud earrings, but other jewelry is not allowed. White string rain gloves are placed on the right side of the saddle, with only three white fingertips showing. Side saddle riders also carry a sandwich case, which holds a flask of either sherry or plain tea and a white bread sandwich with plain chicken or turkey. The sandwich must be cut into quarters, with the crust cut off, and wrapped in white, monogrammed linen.
Jocelyn Dayus of Spotsylvania, VA, and Chelsie Liming of Fredricksburg, VA, are two of last year’s Side Saddle competitors who will return to the 2005 National Horse Show and Family Festival. Also in attendance will be Stephanie Hayes of Chesterfield, VA.
Jocelyn Dayus, a Hunter and Side Saddle trainer and manager at Lake of the Woods Equestrian Center offered the comment, “We absolutely love riding at the National Horse Show. It is the highlight of the year. The show is just a world of its own, with the management doing everything it can to cater to the exhibitors. Everyone is so hospitable with the side saddle riders, and everyone really works hard to make it nice for competitors. I will always do what I can to attend this show!”
The Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle classes will take place in the International Arena on the evening of December 2 and during the afternoon on Saturday, December 3.
Come watch the elegant tradition of Side Saddle at this year’s 122nd National Horse Show.
