30th Anniversary Quarter Horse News Poetry Contest
Equestrian News Release
The first Quarter Horse News Poetry Contest offers prizes for two divisions: the Open Champion and Reserve Champion and the Youth Champion and Reserve Champion. The winning poems will be published in the Dec. 15, 2008, print edition of Quarter Horse News and online at http://www.quarterhorsenews.com. There is no entry fee. If you send ’em, we’ll read ’em.
Open division: Open to all writers 15 years of age or older
Youth division: Open to all writers 14 and under
Prizes (in addition to publication)
Open Champion: Unframed Buck Taylor print, “Portrait of Our Western Heritage,” and $100 Gift Certificate for Western Horseman books
Open Reserve Champion: $100 Gift Certificate for Western Horseman books
Youth Champion: $200 Gift Certificate to Rod’s Western Palace
Youth Reserve Champion: $100 Gift Certificate to Rod’s Western Palace

General Guidelines
All poems must have as their subject some aspect of the Western performance horse industry, including: cutting, reining, reined cow horse, ranch versatility, roping. The subject matter may involve experience in the show pen, outside the show pen, as a rider or as a spectator, etc. Poems may either be in meter and rhyme or in free verse, and no more than 40 lines. For an example, see the poem “Men in Green,” which appeared in the June 15, 2008, issue of Quarter Horse News on Page 14 in “Tack Room Talk,” or online at http://www.quarterhorsenews.com under Industry News.
All entries will be judged in a blind review by the editors to ensure a fair and consistent selection. The winners will be published in the Dec. 15, 2008, issue of Quarter Horse News and online at http://www.quarterhorsenews.com.
Hard Copy Guidelines:
All poems must be written in English. Entries must be typed. Include whether you are entering the Open or Youth division, your age, your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and the titles of poems on a cover sheet. NO contact information should appear on the poems.
Send no more than two (2) poems, each no more than 40 lines. Please, no multiple entries by a single poet. No previously published works or works accepted elsewhere for publication will be considered. Manuscripts will not be returned.

E-mail Guidelines:
Same rules apply as with the hard copy guidelines. Documents should be formatted the same way as a hard copy submission would. E-mail entries to john.williams@cowboypublishing.com. Write “Poetry Contest Entry” in the subject line. Attach one single MS Word document or .txt file that includes the cover sheet and the two (2) poems you are submitting in a single document. Do not attach more than one file. Only .txt or .doc extensions will be opened.
