AAEP Convention Shatters Attendance Record

The 53rd Annual Convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, held Dec. 1 – 5 in Orlando, Fla., set a convention attendance record for the second year in a row, as 7,238 veterinary professionals, guests and exhibitors participated. The previous attendance record of 6,842 was set at the 2006 Convention in San Antonio,Texas.
"Dr. Eleanor Green and the Educational Programs Committee put together another great meeting program for our members, said David L. Foley, AAEP executive director. “I continue to be overwhelmed each and every year with the increasing attendance and the quality of the material. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all those involved."
Highlights from the convention include:
-Installation of new officers and board members.
The 2008 Executive Committee and new members of the board of directors took office on Dec. 4. The members of the Executive Committee are: Eleanor Green, DVM, Gainesville, Fla., president; Harry W. Werner, VMD, president-elect; Nat White II, DVM, Leesburg, Va., vice president; Doug Corey, DVM, Adams, Ore., immediate past president; and R. Reynolds Cowles Jr., DVM, Free Union, Va., treasurer.
New members of the board of directors are: District VII - Dickson D. Varner, DVM, MS, DACT; District VIII - W. David Wilson, BVMS, MS; District X - Roxy J. Bell, DVM, MSc, DACT; and Director-at-Large - Brian S. Carroll, DVM.
-Award winners.
Several awards were presented during the President’s Luncheon on Dec. 4. Honorees were Howard “Gene” Gill, DVM, and James Moore, DVM, recipients of the Distinguished Educator Award; Gary Norwood, DVM, honored with the Distinguished Service Award; George Bagby, MD, and Roy and Gretchen Jackson along with Michael Matz, recipients of the George Stubbs Award; Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, winners of the AAEP’s equine welfare award, the Lavin Cup; and Robert Lewis, DVM, Distinguished Life Member.
Frank J. Milne State-of-the-Art Lecture. World-renowned reproduction specialist Dickson Varner, DVM, MS, DACT, presented this year’s lecture, “From a Sperm’s Eye View – Revisiting Our Perception of This Intriguing Cell.”
Healthy Horses Workshop. This annual day of seminars for horse owners attracted nearly 175 attendees. Articles based on the presentations will soon be available at http://www.aaep.org/horseowner.
Auctions raise funds for AAEP Foundation. The annual live and silent auctions held during the Foundation Celebration and the Welcome Reception raised over $125,000 to go toward programs to help the horse.
