Equestrian News Release
Memo and Carlos – in the Featured Joe Barry Memorial Cup Game Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach
WELLINGTON, FL (January 20, 2006) – Superstar 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso, generally regarded as the world’s best polo player, takes center stage when he leads New Bridge La Dolfina against Airstream in a key 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup game Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The winner automatically advances to the semifinals.
Airstream is led by 16-time U.S. Open champion Memo Gracida, arguably the greatest player in the modern era U.S. polo history. The 49-year-old Gracida was rated at 10 goals for more than 20 years, and is in his second year as a 9-goaler. He was inducted in the Polo Hall of Fame in 1997 and is the only active high-goal Hall of Famer competing in 2006.
Cambiaso, in 1993 at the age of 17, became the youngest 10-goaler in the history of the sport. The five-time U.S. Open champion turns 31 on April 14.
Both players have terrific supporting casts.
Cambiaso will be joined by talented 9-goaler Matias Magrini of Argentina, who co-owns New Bridge Polo Club in Aiken, South Carolina with patron Russ McCall, an Atlanta businessman. Three-goaler Sunny Hale, the first woman to play on a winning team in the U.S. Open, is expected to round out the team.
McCall played in the 26-goal USPA Gold Cup in Aiken with Cambiaso and Magrini.
"It's (International Polo Club) the ultimate polo in the United States,” said McCall. “If I don't play now - I never will. I've never had a team with the potential of two of the greatest players (Cambiaso and Magrini). Who wouldn't want to get on the field with those guys? It should be great.”
Gracida will be joined by his younger brother, 44-year-old Carlos, a 9-time U.S. Open champion. A 10-goaler, Gracida is one of the most accomplished players in polo history and a potent offensive player. Savvy patron Peter Orthwein and 2-goaler Weston Gracida, Memo and Carlos’ nephew, round out the team.
Airstream won its opener 11-10 over Reata last Sunday while New Bridge La Dolfina defeated Reata 13-12 in its first game on Thursday.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
International Polo Club Palm Beach is located at 3667 120th Avenue South, between Pierson Road and Lake Worth Road in Wellington. For information, directions or tickets, please visit the club’s website at http://www.internationalpoloclub.com or call (561) 204-5687.
