Equestrian Adventurer Visits Iceland

This month Equestrian Adventurer (http://www.EquestrianAdventurer.com) joins Kate Tully, courtesy of the Horseman's Yankee Pedlar, as she recounts her horseback journey through Iceland, a beautiful county she describes as "a well-kept secret." Iceland, famous for its hardy, gaited ponies, is located in the Atlantic between Greenland and the United States, closer to the United States' East Coast and less expensive than travelers might assume, making it the ideal location for an equestrian vacation.

Follow Kate as she traverses the Icelandic countryside and experiences its varying natural landscape, from hot springs to glaciers and rolling green hills to steep rocky cliffs. The Icelandic horses, bred for hundreds of years for just these kinds of terrain, provide a smooth and comfortable ride, complete with the ground-covering "tolt," a gait similar to the running walk of American five-gaited breeds.

The Icelandic horses, though pony-sized, are extremely strong and intelligent, making great mounts for children and adults alike. Along the trail, Kate and her fellow travelers occaisionally stopped to switch horses for fresh ones in the traditional way of Icelandic horsemen, allowing for a faster and more exciting pace.

Kate spent five days riding across southern Iceland, from Skálakot Farm to the national park of Thorsmork and back again, though equestrian vacations are available in all areas of this beautiful country.
