SOUTH DAYTONA, FL, August 1, 2008– The 16th annual Student Fund silent auction and raffle was held on Friday, June 20, during the AHP “Break from the Gate in 2008” Seminar in Saratoga Springs, New York.
The Student Fund began in 1993 as a way for members to support the Student Award program. A total of $4,370 was raised this year - $3,781 from the silent auction and $589 from raffle ticket and pin sales. All proceeds benefit the Student Award Contest, which rewards a student pursuing a career in equine publishing with a $1,000 cash award and an all-expense-paid trip to the annual AHP seminar. The Student Fund also provides complimentary student membership and seminar registration certificates to all Student Award applicants, and supports the AHP Student Mentoring Program and Internship Handbook.
Publishers Press, Inc., Shepherdsville, KY, also presents the winner with an all expenses paid trip to one of their Two-Day Customer Education Seminars. The Two-Day Customer Education Seminars are held in Louisville, Kentucky, and are designed to help customers' production employees gain an understanding of how a magazine progresses through the printing process.
Bana Varnon, a journalism major at the University of Texas at Austin, with a 3.9210 GPA won the 2008 Student Award Winner title over 18 other applicants. In January 2007, Bana began working at The Texas Thoroughbred as an intern, and since she's been there, she has learned more about horses and equine journalism than any class could have ever taught her. Upon graduation, she intends to secure employment in the equine magazine or newspaper industries. She attributes this goal to her experience at The Texas Thoroughbred, where she learned first-hand not only equine journalism, but also the publishing industry.
"My trip to Saratoga Springs at the AHP 2008 Seminar was a once in a lifetime experience that I'll never forget," writes Bana. "I'm convinced the most valuable part of it was meeting so many new contacts (and more importantly, friends) with whom I hope to maintain a lasting relationship. Who knows where life will take me after graduation next year, but all I can say is that I hope to join you all again next year in New Orleans!"
Bana was honored on Friday, June 20, 2008, at the Student Award Party held during the AHP Seminar in Saratoga Springs. The theme of this year’s event was “SaraTOGA Party.” Special prizes were raffled at this event and included a free seminar registration to the 2009 AHP Seminar in New Orleans. Event sponsors for the evening were Pfizer Animal Health, the American Quarter Horse Association and AQHA publications.
The Student Fund silent auction was held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday and offered over 100 items with a total value of over $10,000. The highest-priced item sold was Acer Notebook Extensa with a one-year subscription to Arabian Nights' Amazing Horse Adventures donated by Arabian Nights' Amazing Horse Adventures and purchased for $500 by Nancy Cole Silverman from The Equestrian News. Nancy was also the big spender at this year's auction with total bids of $525. The mother/daughter purchases of Fran Welch and former Student Award winner, Angie GrandPre from Cowboy Times, came in second for spending a total of $468.
