Alexandra Thornton, Tobasco Win Small Junior Hunters 15 & Under

WELLINGTON, Fla., Feb.23-- Alexandra Thornton and Tobasco were the last to qualify for the Hunter Classic Spectacular by becoming champion of the Small Junior Hunters 15 and under Saturday at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising.

Thornton, 14, of Bedminster, N.J. and the 10-year-old chestnut gelding, Tobasco, completed their two rounds Saturday with a third in the first trip, adding to the first and second place they earned on Friday and placing them in champion position.

Thornton and Tobasco ride with trainer Bill Cooney of Bedford, N.Y. and have been competing together in the Juniors for 18 months. They were awarded the Hunter Spectacular cooler and their names will be engraved on The Missouri Perpetual Trophy.

"He is a truly consistent horse," Alexandra said. "We go together really well and have a great partnership. He is the horse of a life time. I love him."

Paris Sellon, 15, of Los Angeles, and the 11-year-old gray gelding, Cool Blue, finished with reserve champion honors. Their second place finish with a score of 86 in the first trip added to their first place ribbon on Friday. Paris and Cool Blue train with Dick Carvin also of Los Angeles.

Top placed winner in the first trip over fences on Saturday with a score of 88 was Jessica Springsteen, 15, of Colts Neck, N.J. and the nine-year-old bay gelding, Sublime.

"He was great," Jessica said. "He loves the big ring. It opens up his stride which makes the lines easy. It was a lot of fun."

First place ribbon in the second trip over fences with a score of 88 was Laura King-Kaplan, 15, of Irvington, N.Y. and the nine-year-old bay gelding, Genuine. This horse and rider pair won champion two weeks ago at WEF.
