American Farrier's Association 36th Annual Convention

FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 3 IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

(JANUARY 31, 2007) LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY (AFA) will host the world's largest gathering of professional farriers at its 36th Annual Convention, to be held February 27-March 3 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The convention will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center; host hotels are the nearby Hyatt and Doubletree Hotels. Educational seminars, forging competitions, and a large trade show complement board meetings, forums, and social events for farriers who travel from all corners of the globe. A special day of lectures and demonstrations for the horse-owning public is planned for Saturday.

The AFA presents a wide range of educational programs of interest to farriers.

"In addition to three days of lectures from an international group of experts, there will be a repeat of the popular mini-lectures which started last year," said AFA President Dave Ferguson CJF, TE of Maryland. "There will be a half-day of wet labs with five different programs from which to choose on Wednesday."

A sampling of Thursday's lectures includes Gene Ovnicek with a two-hour lecture on his natural balance hoofcare system; Bob Racich DVM on shoeing for lameness problems in western performance horses; Steve Teichman CJF, farrier to the US Equestrian Team, on new high-tech gait analysis tools using accelerometry technology, and Mark Caldwell FWCF of Myerscough College in England on foot physiology and function.

Friday's lectures include Noel Muller DVM on foot mechanics and breakover, and Michael Savoldi on evaluating trimming techniques. A group presentation by farrier educators and a panel discussion are also planned.

Mini-lectures on both days will be presented by well-known farriers Dan Bradley, RT Goodrich, and Buck O’Neil.

Farrier competitions fill the days, with the highlights of an energetic two-person heavy horse shoemaking class, and a "live" shoeing of horses; highest scoring contestants receive cash prizes, trophies, and qualification to represent the AFA in international competitions around the world.

Saturday's program for horse owners has Jim Quick CJF on shoeing for weightbearing and breakover, Don Gustafson CJF and Myron McLane CJF on tips for horseowners to recognize characteristics of their horses' feet, and a demonstration of shoeing as required for the AFA’s journeyman certification level. Admission for the horse owner's program is $10 for adults; children under age 12 are admitted free.

The trade show part of the convention, organized by the Farrier Industry Association, fills a huge hall at the convention center and will showcase shoes, tools, and equipment from all over the world. It is the largest trade show of farrier products.

The convention culminates with a gala banquet and awards ceremony on Saturday night.

Convention registration is open to all who wish to attend. Professional farriers are especially invited. Membership in the AFA is not required to attend, however members receive discounted admission.

A complete registration and schedule brochure may be downloaded from the American Farrier's Association web site (http://www.americanfarriers.org). Direct information can be obtained by calling the AFA office at 1.877.ANVIL.05, or email farriers@americanfarriers.org. Online registration is available at the AFA web site.
