American Horse Publications awards excellence in equine publishing

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, June 22, 2008 – Saratoga Springs is known for horses, health and history, but in June 2008, it was also known as the site for the American Horse Publications annual seminar. One of the anticipated events during the AHP “Break from the Gate in 2008” Seminar was the annual awards presentations, which were held on Saturday, June 21. The event opened with a reception sponsored by Dover Saddlery and was followed by the Awards Banquet co-sponsored by Quebecor World and Branch Smith Printing. Breyer Animal Creations sponsored the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource Benefit Model centerpiece, which one lucky attendee at each table took home.

The coveted General Excellence Award is presented to publications who fulfill their statement of purpose and show excellence in editorial content and design. Honorable mention was presented in classes with over five entries. General Excellence in the Tabloid/Newspaper category went to Steeplechase/Eventing Times, a twice monthly steeplechase/eventing newspaper. Honorable mention went to Thoroughbred Times, a national newsweekly magazine of Thoroughbred racing. Winning General Excellence Association Magazine circulation under 15,000 was Eventing USA, a national bimonthly eventing magazine, with Hoof Beats, an international monthly harness racing magazine capturing honorable mention. The General Excellence Association Magazine circulation 15,000 and over class winner was America's Horse, an official publication of the American Quarter Horse Association with honorable mention to USDF Connection, a national monthly dressage magazine for United States Dressage Federation members. In the category for General Excellence State or Regional Publication, any format, the top honors went to The Florida Horse, a monthly state horse racing magazine, with honorable mention given to Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, a regional monthly Thoroughbred magazine. Self Supported Free Publication, any format was a new category added in 2008. The winner was Horse Connection, a horse marketing and lifestyle guide. Garnering honorable mention was The Northwest Horse Source, a monthly regional all-breed publication. In the category for General Excellence Self-Supported Magazine with circulation under 15,000, the winner was Today's Pro Farrier, a bimonthly magazine featuring education for farriers, vets, and horse owners. Honorable mention went to Arabian Horse Times, a monthly international Arabian magazine. In the category of General Excellence for Self-Supported Magazine with circulation 15,000 and over, the winner was Western Horseman, a national monthly all-breed magazine. Three magazines shared honorable mention. Dressage Today is a dressage riding and training magazine. Horse & Rider focuses on how-to western training and instruction. Keeneland Magazine provides in-depth coverage of Keeneland Racecourses and Bluegrass lifestyle. All winners in the General Excellence classes were eligible for the General Excellence Overall Publication award and were judged by a separate judge. The prestigious award was presented to Western Horseman.

A laser engraved plaque was presented to the first place winners in every class. Certificates were awarded for second place in classes with 5-10 entries and third place in classes with 11-15 entries. Honorable mention certificates were awarded in classes where there were more than 15 entries. A Certificate of Achievement was provided for the author, designer, photographer or illustrator who placed in the top three in each class. AHP provides the First Place winners in each class with an awards contest winner logo in a jpeg format to publish their achievement for the year 2007.

Member publications achieving multiple honors in a variety of categories included The Florida Horse with 13 awards; Paint Horse Journal and Western Horseman with 12 awards each; The Chronicle of the Horse with 11 awards; NRHA Reiner with 8 awards; Appaloosa Journal, The American Quarter Horse Journal, and Thoroughbred Times with 7 awards each; Barrel Horse News and Modern Arabian Horse with 6 awards each; Arabian Horse Times, Horse & Rider, John Lyons Perfect Horse, Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse News, and TheHorse.com with 5 awards each.

Corporate members who placed well in this year’s competition included Pfizer Animal Health which placed first in the Corporate/Affiliate Advertisement class with the ad, "Strongid C2X Jumping" and honorable mention for ads on "Solitude IGR" and "Zylexis." Merial Ltd. placed second with an ad on "EQUIOXX®." Circle Y Saddles received third place for their ad on the "John Wayne Saddle." In the Equine-related Book (Text) classes, Storey Publishing took home the top honors earning first for "Ride the Right Horse" by Yvonne Barteau and second for "The Horse Training Problem Solver" by Jessica Jahiel. Trafalgar Square Books placed third with "The Rider's Pain-Free Back " by James Warson, MD, with Ami Hendrickson and received honorable mention for "Back to Work" by Lucinda Dyer and "Longeing the Rider for a Perfect Seat" by Linda Benedik. The Lyons Press earned second place in the pictorial book division with "Living Western Horsemanship."

Affiliate members are eligible to enter their own work published in member publications. In the Open Color Photograph class, Amy Dragoo entered "Coffins? Can Do!" published in Practical Horseman, and placed third. Dr. Rossana Figuerola earned honorable mention for her photograph published in The Peruvian Classified. Writer Kara Stewart received a first for her service to the reader article, "In Case of Emergency," published in Horse Illustrated. Kara also authored the feature article, "It's Never Too Late," to earn an honorable mention for Horse Illustrated.

Several Affiliate members authored winning articles that were entered by Publication Members. Kate Riordan's instructional article, "Reining Tango: Speed Transitions" published in NRHA Reiner, earned a first place. Denise Steffanus' contribution to the news reporting feature, "Remembering Barbaro," earned honorable mention for Thoroughbred Times. Tracy Gantz wrote "Claim to Fame," an instructional article that placed second for Paint Horse Journal. Maureen Gallatin wrote the instructional article, "Down to Earth Advice for Rearing" with John Lyons for Perfect Horse which received a third. Irene Stamatelakys wrote two service to the reader articles that earned a second and honorable mention for Paint Horse Journal. Jennifer Nice also earned dual honors, a second place for The Trail Rider in service to the reader and a second place for Modern Arabian Horse in event coverage. Cheryl Dudley's personality profile titled, "A Straight Shooter" earned honorable mention for Appaloosa Journal. "In Search of the Last Cowboy," written by Ryan Thomas Bell, was the winning feature article for Western Horseman.

Affiliate member, Leigh Thiel, was the Account Director on all three ads submitted by Pfizer Animal Health that earned a first and two honorable mentions. USDF Connection received a first place for artwork by illustrator Catherine Twomey.

Electronic Publication members who received awards included EquiSearch.com, who earned firsts in Electronic Publication and Electronic Newsletter. TheHorse.com dominated the online editorial content classes winning both Online News Reporting classes and the Online Service to the Reader class. They also earned second place in Online News Reporting Related Feature Story.

Student members who placed in the Student Equine-related Journalism class included the 2007 Student Award Winner, Nicole Lanphear, who won the class for "With the Help of Horses" published in Klipsun Magazine. Kandace York earned second and third for articles published in Equine Journal.

The Merial Human-Animal Bond Award was presented for the seventh year to the article that best reflected and promoted the strengthening of the relationship between horses and people. The 22 entries in the Merial Human-Animal Bond Award class were judged for exceptional quality and on the ability to convey the special relationship between man and horse and connect with the reader. AHP members were allowed to enter only one entry in this class. The winner of the Merial Human-Animal Bond Award is the author of the article who received a special engraved trophy presented by Merial. The member publication, in which the article was published, received an engraved plaque. The winner was Erin Ryder, for her article, "Hoofing It with John Henry" published online at TheHorse.com.

Participation in this year’s contest represented 105 AHP members and 1,092 entries. Held since 1974, the AHP Annual Awards Contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in equine publishing as well as professional critiques for improvement. AHP Executive Director, Chris Brune, performed the duties of processing the entries with assistance from Ellen Kiser of Blood-Horse Publications. Webmaster, Christy West, produced the PowerPoint awards presentation. AHP newsletter editor and design team, Jeremy Law and Kim Kulers at 360° Marketing Solutions, designed the awards program. The Executive Director acquired this year’s slate of 29 professionals judges. A complete list of the winners is available online at the AHP website and is included in the printed 2008 Annual Awards Program, which is mailed to all AHP members.

The Awards Committee will review the current contest rules and procedures for improvement, clarity, fairness, and variety. Rules for the 2009 Annual Awards Contest for material published in 2008 will be available to members in December.
