AMHA Honors its Own
Equestrian News Release
The annual convention of the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) was a resounding success. More than 300 Morgan enthusiasts enjoyed this week-long event held in Lexington, Kentucky, February 15-18. The week was filled with exciting demonstrations and interesting seminars as well as the AMHA Board of Directors quarterly meeting. The annual stallion service auction, which had more than 70 stallions, brought in nearly $140,000, which will be split between the Association’s ten regional shows, the World Morgan Futurity, and marketing for the Morgan breed.
The annual convention also is time when the Association members pay tribute to their own. Ms. Lisa Singer of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, was this year’s recipient of the Morgan International Competition Award for her many years of being one of the Morgan breed’s top overseas competitor.
Mrs. Margaret Van Meter of Springfield, Illinois, was honored with the Cecil Brown Sportsmanship Award for her enthusiastic support of her fellow competitors.
Trainers Mrs. Susan Parks Morgan of Hollister, California; Mr. S. Robert Orcutt of Rowley, Massachusetts; Mrs. Bonnie Sogoloff of Charlotte, Vermont; and overseas Ms. Kathryn Schwartz of Troy, Ohio, were recognized for their time spent in the show ring as recipients of the Golden Reins Award, which is given to those who have influenced the Morgan industry through their knowledge, time, talent, and commitment.
Mrs. Gail Jaeger of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was celebrated as the AMHA Youth Person of the Year for her time devoted to the breed’s youth throughout the years.
Mr. Robert Atkinson of Springfield, Massachusetts, was lauded for his many years of legal counsel to AMHA.
Mr. James Stewart of Medina, Ohio, and Mrs. Anne Brown of Westford, Vermont, were acknowledged as the AMHA Man of the Year and AMHA Woman of the Year, respectively, for their countless contributions to the breed.
The AMHA Hall of Fame annually recognizes those who have given long-term support to the breed through AMHA activities. Inducted this year were Mr. Lee Baldarelli of Incline Village, Nevada; Ms. Ruth Parkinson of Springfield, Illinois; and Mr. and Mrs. Ray and Carol Potts of Eva, Alabama.
The AMHA Breeder’s Hall of Fame Award acknowledges those breeders who have produced Morgans that have had a significant impact on the breed. Mr. Ivan Beattie of East of Equinox in Manchester Center, Vermont, was honored for his family’s nearly 400 Morgan horses which can be found across the United States and the world; Mr. Herbert V. Kohler of Kohler, Wisconsin, has been breeding award-winning Morgans since the 1970s under his HVK prefix; and The University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm of Weybridge, Vermont, was celebrated for continuing a legacy of historic commitment to the breed.
