Anne Reynolds and Very Smart Flo Jo Win 2008 NRCHA Hackamore Classic

The 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic Non Pro title was won on Sunday, April 27, by the association’s leading Non Pro - Anne Reynolds. In the signature event at the Paso Robles Events Center in Paso Robles, California, Reynolds teamed up with Very Smart Flo Jo, a 4-year-old mare by Very Smart Remedy and out of Teena Cash Flo and added another $9,492 to her million plus in career earnings.

Anne and Very Smart Flo Jo have already enjoyed a lucrative career together. They placed in the top 10 at the 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, won both the Open and Non Pro Idaho Snaffle Bit Futurity, and tied for Reserve at the 2008 NRCHA Stakes.

“This is a great mare. I really like everything about her,” noted Reynolds shortly after completing the cow work.

Going in as draw two in the herd work, the pair marked a 143 to take a third place position. “We cut our first cow, and it looked like it would be good, but it ran across the pen. She stayed right on it though,” said Anne. “The second cow was real good, and let us work.”

Although Reynolds says candidly that Very Smart Flo Jo’s rein work was one of her weaker runs in competition, she was proud of the mare. “She’s green in the hackamore – so we were just a little off. She still marked a 144.5.”

As always, the title came down to the fence work, where the mare boxed well and had tight turns. “We fell away as we went to circle, and it probably didn’t look as good as it could have – but she felt solid.” The fence work, good for a 146, clinched the title with a composite of 433.5.

Very Smart Flo Jo is owned by Reynold’s biggest fan, her mother, Joyce Pearson. Although Joyce wasn’t able to attend, Anne let her know about the win right away, by phone.

Laurie Ward and Kiss Me A Little earned the Reserve Championship with a 430.5. They marked 145 in the herd work, 140 in the rein work, and 145 down the fence to take home $7,797. Kiss Me A Little, owned by Ward Ranch, is out of Kiss Me Mister and was sired by Smart Little Pepinic, the stallion Laurie’s husband, John Ward, rode to the Hackamore Classic Bridle Spectacular Championship on Saturday night.

Tammy Jo Hays traveled all the way from Texas to win the Intermediate Non Pro title and $3,645 on Little San Rose with a composite score of 424.5. Little San Rose is by Smart Little Lena and out of Dox San Rose.

The Amateur Championship was awarded to Heather Livingston, who rode her horse Allthatglittersisme to a 408.5 total – worth $1,760. Allthatglittersisme is by Yellow Roan Of Texas and out of Mistys Remedy.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
