ApHC Congratulates Winning Appaloosa and Rider with $50,000

PERRY, Ga.—Appaloosa, Honkin Hunter, earned his weight and then some in dollars in the 2-year-old Hunt Seat Futurity at the Just For Pleasure Show in Perry, Georgia. Not only did the Appaloosa win awards and prize money from the class, the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) bestowed an additional $50,000 to Honkin Hunter and his exhibitor Nancy Sue Ryan of Nocona, Texas!

Of the $50,000, Honkin Hunter walked away with $10,000, and Nancy Sue Ryan won $40,000 thanks to the Appaloosa Excellence Program (APEX) and APEX Color payout respectively. APEX was developed to encourage owners to participate with their Appaloosas in open competition, and $10,000 payouts are encouraging! APEX $10,000 payouts are awarded the winning Appaloosas in eight specific competitions at certain events, such as the 2-year-old Hunt Seat Futurity at the Just For Pleasure Show. Nancy Sue Ryan was awarded the $40,000 thanks to the APEX color payout, which is awarded to the rider of the winning Appaloosa if the Appaloosa has an identifiable coat pattern as determined by the ApHC Registrar.

“One of the most effective marketing tools we have as a breed is the opportunity to showcase Appaloosa talent in open competition,” says ApHC CEO Steve Taylor. “The ApHC is delighted to have representatives such as Honkin Hunter perform so well.”

Honkin Hunter, proudly owned by Jennifer Carter of Clarklake, Mich., competed at Just For Pleasure like a pro, though a mere two months ago he made his show debut in Fort Worth, Texas at the 2008 World Championship Appaloosa Show where he earned third place in 2-year-old Snaffle Bit Hunter under Saddle. This promising gelding, sired by The Hunter (ApHC) and out of Temons Tonka (ApHC), was bred by Char-O-Lot Ranch in Myakka City, Fla.

To be eligible for APEX and APEX color payouts, competing Appaloosas must be ApHC-registered and enrolled in the Appaloosa Competitive All-breed Activities Program (ACCAP), or enrollment in the ApHC Distance Program to compete for the Haggin Cup. The rider must be an ApHC member.

In addition to the APEX payouts, the ApHC offers Appaloosa Competition Incentives. The ApHC will award $1,000 to the highest placing Appaloosa meeting the eligibility requirements in five events. Competing Appaloosa must be ApHC-registered and the rider must be an ApHC member.

The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) was established in 1938, with a mission of preserving, promoting and enhancing the Appaloosa breed. The ApHC has since registered more than 670,000 Appaloosas, which are known for their distinctive color, intelligence and even temperament. True to their reputation as an extremely versatile breed, Appaloosas can be found in nearly every discipline, including racing, endurance riding or serving as reliable family horses. The international breed registry is headquartered in Moscow, Idaho; the heart of the Palouse region, the Appaloosa breed’s namesake and point of origin.
