Appaloosa is a cut above in 350-Yard Claiming Race

MOSCOW, Idaho—Appaloosa gelding Cowboy Cut proved to have the fastest legs on the track in a 350-yard claiming race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., on Apr. 6. Cowboy Cut and eight other Appaloosas and Paint horses competed for a purse of $6,000.

Cowboy Cut (First Wrangler, AQHA, x Miss Eye Appeal) took first place after completing the distance in 18.160 seconds. Five-year-old Cowboy Cut won $3,456, bringing his lifetime racing earnings to $32,833. The Missouri-bred Appaloosa is owned by Garett Rose of Kiowa, Okla., trained by Angie Jones, and was bred by Brenda and Gregory Short.

Paint Horse Chicks A Meddlin placed second, while Appaloosa D D Marble earned third. The 6-year-old gelding completed the race in 18.506 seconds to win $634, bringing D D Marble’s lifetime earnings to $34,714. D D Marble (My Designated Driver, AQHA, x All The Marbles) is owned by Militza Elliott of Sallisaw, Okla., trained by Hubert Blankenship and was bred by G and G Partnership of Girard, Kan.

The following horses completed the race: Looks Like Money (APHA), Patchskid (ApHC), So Royally Quick (APHA), Diamonds N Jets (APHA), Solid Cowboy (APHA) and Heza Fast Flash (APHA).

Horses competing in this claiming race were available for purchase at $7,500. Only Solid Cowboy was claimed.

Appaloosa Racing

Appaloosas have long been an integral part of one of America’s most popular spectator sports—horse racing. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) officially recognized the sport in 1962, beginning Appaloosa racing history with four races and 23 starters competing for $12,000 in total purses. In 2008, 186 Appaloosas competed in 399 races for $3.1 million in total purses.
