Appaloosas Earn Honors at National Championship Appaloosa Endurance Ride

Moscow, Idaho - The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is proud to announce the top three placings in the inaugural 50-mile National Championship Endurance Ride, which took place on June 3, 2006, in Palmyra, Wisconsin. The Champion was Fourmiles Kashtin, of Eagle, Wisconsin, with Dawn Haas riding. Dawn and Fourmiles Kashtin also took top honors for conditioning, winning the George Hatley Cup for the Appaloosa with the best condition at the end of the race. Taking 2nd place was Varre Blackcherry, ridden by Jeffery Hartman of Huntington, Pennsylvania. 3rd place went to DKG Midnight Lace and rider Laurie Durbin of Winfield, Missouri.

ApHC Vice President Eric Beenč was among those who attended the race. "I believe the first Endurance Championship was a great success," he said, "with 19 entries that came from Canada, Vermont, Idaho, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Illinois."

Both the riders and horses had to qualify for the event and only had a short time to do so. In order to qualify for the ride, the Appaloosa must be regular- or CPO-registered with the ApHC, and the owner must be a current ApHC member in good standing. The horse and rider must each have completed 100 lifetime distance miles. All of the competitors must have successfully completed a 50-mile endurance ride prior to the Championship.

"The momentum in the distance program is continuing to build," says Beenč, "This is due to the advances that the ApHC has recently made with the distance program including adding a Record of Merit that can be earned in addition to the Championship ride. Also, a $10,000 reward has been added for an Appaloosa that wins the Haggin Cup at the famous Western States Tevis ride." He adds, "This segment of our association has great potential for growth and the Board of Directors has committed to the task of building the program."

The 2007 National Championship Endurance Ride is scheduled for November 17, 2007, at Land Between the Lakes, Kentucky.

The Appaloosa Horse Club offers a full slate of programs for those who enjoy time spent in the saddle of an Appaloosa, designed for all levels of participation and experience.
