Appaloosa Dashes across Finish Line

CLAREMORE, Okla.—Appaloosa, Bold Dashing, made a colorful impression May 5 in a 550-yard claiming race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. The race offered a $5,500 purse.

Bold Dashing, a 3-year-old Appaloosa gelding, flew across the finish line first in 27.478 seconds. The Oklahoma-bred Appaloosa won $3,228, bringing his lifetime earnings to $10,302. Bold Dashing is by Dashing Lad (JC) out of Bold Believer (ApHC), by Bold Gun (JC). Bold Dashing is owned by Jeffery Tyer of Oaks, Okla., was bred by John Haid Jr. of Siloam Springs, Ark., trained by Robert Dimitt and was ridden by Mike Frederick.

Streaknow, a 3-year-old Appaloosa mare, followed in a close second and completed the track in 27.753 seconds. Streaknow, with Jay Jsames aboard, won $1,076, bringing her lifetime earnings to $5,837. The Oklahoma-bred Appaloosa is by I Want It Now (AQHA) out of The Energizer Bunny (ApHC), by Zevis Scooter Bug (ApHC). Streaknow is owned, trained and was bred by Raymond Venn of Claremore, Okla.

Sassy Man, a 4-year-old Paint Horse gelding, completed the track in 27.867 seconds for third place. Sassy Man drew off under Cody Smith and won $592. The Paint Horse is owned and trained by Virgil Sitsler.

Other horses who completed the race include Pocket Full of Bugs (ApHC), I Wanta Be First (APHA), Chaser Like Me (APHA) and Grand Way (ApHC).

Horses who competed in this claiming race were available for purchase for $10,000.

Appaloosa Racing

Appaloosas have long been an integral part of one of America’s most popular spectator sports—horse racing. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) officially recognized the sport in 1962, beginning Appaloosa racing history with four races and 23 starters competing for $12,000 in total purses. In 2007, 197 starters competed in 441 races for $2,725,151 in total purses.

Racing fans can find Appaloosas crossing the finish line in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
