Appaloosa Dominates in California Claiming Race

LOS ALAMITOS, CALI.—A lone Appaloosa and a pack of Quarter Horses battled for a first place win Oct. 19 in a 300-yard claiming race at Los Alamitos Race Track in Los Alamitos, Cali. Dillons Bux, an Appaloosa stallion, pulled ahead to earn the champion title and a piece of the $6,370 purse.

Dillons Bux, a 6-year-old Appaloosa, completed the track in 15.747 seconds with Juan Andrade aboard. The Oregon-bred stallion won $2,915, bringing his lifetime earnings to $23,781. Dillons Bux is by Chicks Slew of Bux (AQHA) and out of Missj.j. The Appaloosa is owned and trained by Jose A. Flores of Pasadena, Cali. And was bred by Scott A. Merrill of Riverside, Cali.

Damn the Money, a Quarter Horse, followed Dillons Bux in second. The 4-year-old stallion completed the track in 16.117 seconds, and won $1, 192. Damn the Money is owned and trained by Hector Sanchez, and was ridden by Carlos Huerta.

Mb Rare Valentine (AQHA) drifted past his competitors to earn third. With Gary Boag aboard, the Quarter Horse completed the track in 16.142 seconds and won $663. The 4-year-old gelding is owned by Jose A. Bocanegra and trained by Yanet Rodriguez.

Also ran—Outlaw Johnny (AQHA) won $397, Ineeda Cocktail (AQHA) won $303, Tuff Teddy Sbl (AQHA) won $300, Work N Boots (AQHA) won $300 and Six Cees Beduino (AQHA) won $300.

Horse who competed in this claiming race were available for purchase for $2,000.

Appaloosa Racing

Appaloosas have long been an integral part of one of America’s most popular spectator sports—horse racing. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) officially recognized the sport in 1962, beginning Appaloosa racing history with four races and 23 starters competing for $12,000 in total purses. In 2006, 203 starters competed in 440 races for $2,904,774 in total purses.

Racing fans can find Appaloosas crossing the finish line in Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
