Boyd Rice Marks NRCHA Derby Herd Work Preliminary High Scores on Oh Cay N Short and Mr Playinstylish

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby began Tuesday, June 16, at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California, with the Open, Intermediate Open, and Limited Open preliminary herd work. The 117-horse field was competing for a coveted spot in the finals, where the Open Champion will be awarded a check for more than $42,000!

Spectators, participants, and other exhibitors flock to the sidelines when Boyd Rice rides into the herd at any event. During the 2009 NRCHA Derby preliminaries, the Spearman, Texas, trainer didn't disappoint - he tied himself for the lead on a pair of exceptional athletes with identical scores of 219.

Early in the day, Rice competed on his 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Oh Cay N Short, by Oh Cay Quixote out of Bit Of Shorty, owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight of Peoria, Arizona.

He had to wait until the second to last set to show Mr Playinstylish, owned by Kit and Charlie Moncrief. Mr Playinstylish, by Playin Stylish out of Tari Chic Gay, was a top ten finisher at the 2008 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, and won the Open Herd Work.

Although the Derby is a 3-phase event, Rice's high herd work scores put him in an advantageous position to advance to the clean-slate finals on Sunday, June 21.

Topping the Intermediate Open division was former NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Brandon Staebler, who piloted Chic Ostarlight to a score of 216.5. Chic Ostarlight, by Smart Chic Olena and out of Cassandra Starlight, is owned by Kim Routh.

Tyler Merrill guided Circle Six Spark 205 to a 210 to lead the Limited Open

division. Circle Six Spark 205, by Shining Spark out of Begay 295, is owned

by Troy Herthel.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2009, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
