Boyd Rice Tops Snaffle Bit Futurity Herd Work Prelims On Mr Playinstylish

For the second year in a row, Spearman, Texas trainer Boyd Rice topped the herd work preliminaries of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity. Rice’s score of 219.5 on Mr Playinstylish, owned by Kit and Charlie Moncrief, beat the next closest competitor by a full point, and certainly got the attention of the crowd at the Reno Livestock Event Center.

If this year’s Futurity unfolds like last year, this preliminary win could foretell a great finish. In 2007, Boyd and Oh Cay N Short, earned the high score in the preliminary herd work, and went on to win the Open Championship.

Boyd, who is a National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame Inductee, has won over $2.1 million in cutting competition, but he’s become known as a tough to beat reined cow horse competitor. Along with his 2007 Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship, he also earned the Reserve title in 2005.

And for Kit and Charlie Moncrief, Mr Playinstylish’s owners, it was also the second year that they won a preliminary award – as Rice rode one of their horses to also win the cow work preliminaries last year. At the Annual Hall of Fame Banquet on October 2, Rice will be awarded a Gist Silversmiths Gold Buckle, sponsored by Bill and Michelle Cowan, and a Cutting Horse Bronze from the NCHA, for the preliminary herd work win.

Ed Robertson and his catch ride, That CD Rocks, finished the herd work as the Intermediate Open division winners. By CD Lights and out of Shiney Tari, That CD Rocks was originally an entry for former Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Brandon Staebler, but a fractured leg sidelined him from competition. Robertson and CD Lights marked a 217.5 on the first day of the competition.

And in the Limited Open division, Will Pennebaker and Andy Sherrerd tied for the win with identical scores of 215.5. Pennebaker rode his horse, Snorty Little Pep by Snorty Lena and out of Badger Sis, while Sherrerd piloted Roostin Houston, by Hey Houston out of Cherroo. Roostin Houston is owned by Cowan Select Horses LLC.

The preliminary round continues Wednesday with the first day of rein work competition. The preliminaries conclude with the cow work on Tuesday, September 30.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Adequan®, Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
