Parentage verification required for solid Paints at APHA World Show

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—The owners of solid Paint-Bred and Breeding Stock Registry Paint Horses who wish to take advantage of the new classes offered at APHA’s upcoming World Championship Paint Horse Show are advised to quickly verify their horses’ parentage through DNA testing.

Set for June 25–July 8 in Fort Worth, Texas, this year’s World Show will include several new classes for solid Paint-Bred and Breeding Stock Registry horses. Parentage verification is necessary for all horses that are not listed in APHA’s Regular Registry.

Parentage verification is a simple process. Owners request a test kit from APHA and submit a sample of their horses’ hair to the association’s approved lab for DNA identification. Each kit costs $60 to process and comes with easy-to-follow directions.

Horses competing at APHA’s World Show must have parentage verification on file with the association no later than May 1. Because the testing process takes 25 working days, owners are advised to get the process started as soon as possible.

“Parentage verification should be done now to avoid the last-minute rush and possible exclusion from the class,” said Barbara Scheffler, APHA director of field services.

To order a DNA kit for testing or for more information on parentage verification for your Paint Horses, call APHA’s Field Services Department at (817) 834-2742, ext. 308 or 221.

New opportunities for solid Paint-Bred/Breeding Stock Registry horses

The 2006 World Championship Paint Horse Show features three new classes for solid Paint-Bred and Breeding Stock Registry horses. These include solid Paint-bred trail, solid Paint-bred barrel racing and solid Paint-bred cutting. The show will also have Breeding Stock Western pleasure and Breeding Stock hunter under saddle classes.

Owners of solid Paint-bred horses can also compete at other APHA events. Beginning this year, all APHA-approved shows must offer at least six halter classes and two performance classes for solid Paint-bred horses.

At the association’s newest event, Paint Vegas, which is set for Dec. 5-9 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the South Coast Casino equestrian complex, solid Paint-Bred and Breeding Stock Registry horses will be allowed to show in most of the same non-APHA-pointed classes as Regular Registry horses.

Parentage verification for solid Paint-breds and breeding stocks is also required to compete at Paint Vegas.

More about the largest Paint Horse show on earth

An annual non-qualifying event for registered American Paint Horses, the APHA World Championship Show will include 179 classes, including five Challenge Series classes and three sweepstakes events. A select sale, a trade show and many other special activities will also be offered.

All World Show activities take place at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, an 85-acre equine complex with three major air-conditioned arenas, located in the heart of Fort Worth’s cultural district.

The World Show has experienced steady and sustained growth throughout the years. The record 4,848 entries last year represented a 78-percent increase over the 2,727 entries of 10 years ago.

Approximately 2,000 horses are expected to compete at the 2006 World Show.

Paint Horse owners who wish to participate are advised to get their entries and reservations in early. Stall and RV reservations, as well as early class entries, are due May 1. The World Show Premium Book will be available in March with a complete schedule, forms and other information about the show.
