Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center to Host USHJA Emerging Athlete Program Clinic

Buffalo, NY - June 15, 2009 - The Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center (BTRC) is pleased to announce that they are hosting a clinic for the USHJA Emerging Athlete Program on June 29 and 30. The clinic will be led by Melanie Smith Taylor, Olympic gold medalist and assistant Chef d'Equipe for the U.S. Show Jumping team. While the riders have already been chosen for the clinic, auditing space is still available. The price for auditing is $25 per person, per day.

The USHJA Emerging Athlete Program includes three levels: the Level I Training Sessions, the Regional Level II Training Sessions, and the National Training Session.

There will be 11 Level I Training Sessions held in each USHJA zone in the country (with two in California) from April through July. They are held over two days and will be run at levels of 3', 3'6", and 4'. While there is no minimum age requirement, it is limited to riders 21 years of age and under, which is the age limit of the "Young Rider" in the United States.

The Level I Training Sessions will be open to 24 riders with three groups of eight riders each. Taylor explained that the riders will demonstrate and learn flatwork and gymnastic exercises on the first day, and they will ride a course on the second day. Riders will walk and help set the course.

Twenty-four young riders from New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey will be in the Level I USHJA Emerging Athlete Program clinic held at the BTRC.

For more information on auditing the clinic, please contact the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center at 716-877-9295 or email becandbtrc@aol.com.

Located at 950 Amherst Street in the heart of metropolitan Buffalo, the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center is the home of the Buffalo Equestrian Center and SBS Farms, Inc. The five-acre site includes the indoor sand 120x90 riding arena, stables, paddocks and a newly constructed outdoor riding ring. The spectacular barn offers permanent stalls for all clinic participants.

The Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center has been the site of a therapeutic riding program for six years. The BTRC currently offers programs for mentally and emotionally impaired, learning disabled and developmentally challenged children ages 6 to 16. Volunteers are always needed and are an invaluable part of the program. They can assist with horse care and handling or can serve as a friend and side walker.
