Jan Byyny Rises to the Top after Cross-Country at the Jersey Fresh Three-Day...
Equestrian News Release
Hans Gerling reports from Allentown, New Jersey
Allentown, NJ – June 4, 2006 – After two exceptional cross-country rounds, Jan Byyny is sitting in first and second place in the CCI*** division. Waterfront, Byyny’s second place horse, was the second horse out of the box. With the fastest time of the division, Waterfront held onto the lead until his stable mate, Task Force, added only marginally more time penalties to his third place dressage score and claim the lead.
Many competitors were thrown off by the weather conditions, which seemed to have more of a psychological effect instead of actually causing physical problems. Throughout the morning, the CCI** division faced off-and-on sprinkles. However during the lunch break, the cross-country course received a real dousing. Even through the weather cleared by the start of the CCI*** division, many of the riders seemed tentative.
With Byyny turning in the two fastest times of the division, the event literally evolved into a horse race, where some fast times meant huge jumps up the leader board.
Bonnie Mosser, riding Rebecca Polan’s horse Close the Deal, looked aggressive and confident and moved from sixth place after dressage up to third place. Polan rode the horse through the CCI** level before handing the reins over to Mosser. Close the Deal is an excellent show jumper and could close the gap on Byyny’s horses tomarrow.
Jen Libby produced the third fastest time of the division to sit in fourth place. However this pair’s Achilles Heel is Sunday’s painted rails, so Libby may not be able to climb any further up the scorecard. Not to be outdone, Jen’s sister Emilee had a clean, but slightly slower round to move into tenth place.
Several other combinations including Michael Pollard and Voltaire (8th), Samantha Taylor and Livewire (7th) and John Holling and Lion King II (5th) all enjoyed superb rounds.
While some had great days, others fared much worse. Darren Chiacchia and Windfall 2 fell from first to last place after racking up a cricket score on the cross-country. Buck Davidson on Idalgo and Mike Winter on Kingpin had surprisingly poor rides, as did Heather Gillet’s normally brilliant horse Pickle Road.
In the CCI** division Kate Ditchey riding Belmont moved to the top of the stack with a speedy round. Ditchey, who trains with Phillip Dutton, gave him full credit for helping her with the conditions. Wendy Bebie and Phoenix (2nd) are snapping at Ditchey’s heels following one of only three double clear rounds. Phillip Dutton riding Tru Luck (3rd) unsurprisingly was one of the other double clears and sits less than three marks behind his student.
Becky Holder (4th) was surprisingly slow on Glorious Joy. However, her winning dressage mark means that she still is less than a rail out of first.
While Byyny looks like she will be tough to overcome in the CCI***, the CCI** should be a nail biter, so tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion.
