New AjPHA Presidential Service Project Supports Cancer Research

“One Stride at a Time”

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—Want to help battle cancer and get great gear? The more than 7,000–member American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) recently launched an on-line store, located at cafepress.com/ajpha, as part of its 2007 Presidential Service Project, “One Stride at a Time”. The project is an annual good-will endeavor that encourages all APHA Youth members to give back to their communities and is chosen by each incoming AjPHA president.

One Stride at a Time, created by AjPHA President Laura Akerlund of Grafton, Wis., to raise money for cancer research, expands the scope of the project in 2007 to allow the public to participate through opportunities like the on-line store, which will donate all proceeds from cafepress.com/ajpha to the cause.

“All of us know someone who has survived, passed away from or has been diagnosed with cancer. This is for them,” said Akerlund in an AjPHA video announcing the project at ajpha.com.

The public may also become involved with One Stride at a Time through APHA regional clubs, which are local groups comprised of Paint Horse adult and Youth members from specific geographic areas. Regional clubs have the opportunity to hold fund-raising events and participate in cancer walks and runs in their respective communities. At the end of the summer in 2007, funds will be gathered and these affiliates will be allowed the option of either donating the money to a charitable foundation or to an individual in their community who is fighting cancer.

For their efforts, the clubs are eligible for the 2007 From the Heart Award—given by AjPHA to the club that raises the most money and displays the highest level of dedication to the project. The From the Heart prize, a $500 cash award presented by long-time APHA Corporate Sponsor Markel Insurance, will be presented at the 2007 World Championship Paint Horse Show, set for June 24–July 7 in Fort Worth, Texas.t“The American Junior Paint Horse Association is excited to present the public with this opportunity to support the fight against cancer,” said Director of Youth Activities Betsy Francis. “With One Stride at a Time, a person may help at whatever level works best for them—from purchasing an item on-line to becoming involved with their local regional club’s community projects.”

For more information about the fund-raiser and how to get involved, visit ajpha.com, where you can also view the video of Akerlund speaking about the project. The Web site also includes a list of regional clubs, many of which have fund-raisers currently underway. For further details, contact the director of Youth activities by e-mail at coordinator@ajpha.com, or phone (817) 834-2742, extension 248.
