Dunwalke’s Group of Winners Excel at Capital Challenge Horse Show

Wellington, FL – October 11, 2006 – Alexandra Thornton of Bedminster, NJ, added to her collection of tricolors once again this weekend at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She trains with the respected equestrian judge, trainer, and horsewoman Susie Humes. Capital Challenge began September 30 and concluded on October 8, 2006, and Thornton competed indoors in the Junior Hunter division for the very first time.

The twelve year old piloted For The Music in the Large Junior 15 and Under Hunters and received ribbons in every class. She also guided her chestnut gelding Tobasco to the reserve championship in the Small Junior 15 and Under division after capturing second, third, fourth, and seventh place ribbons.

“Last year Alexandra showed in the Children’s Hunter division here at Capital Challenge, but the classes were held outside,” explained Humes. “I thought she did an outstanding job riding indoors this year and at the bigger jumps. It can be a lot more intimidating to ride inside, and she definitely rose to the challenge. She is still getting used to her new horse, High Noon, and she had some nice rounds with him as well,” she continued. “Alexandra has worked really hard to prepare for Capital Challenge, as well as the National Horse Show in Florida. She has to balance her schedule carefully with school, the horses, and ballet.”

Thornton’s horses, owned by Dunwalke LLC, also made an appearance in the professional hunter divisions. Ken Smith rode For The Music in the Regular Conformation Hunters and came away with three second places, two fifths, and a fourth in the model class, just missing the reserve championship. Scott Stewart earned the reserve championship in the Regular Working Hunters aboard High Noon and took home three seconds, a third, and a fifth.

“Ken rides For The Music better than anyone,” related Humes, “and Dunwalke purchased High Noon from Scott Stewart, so we agreed it would be nice to have him finish out the year with the horse in the Regular Working division. Both of them are fabulous riders.” She added, “It’s helpful for Alexandra to watch such great riders on her horses. She can really see the re-balancing of the horse and observe the relationship of these expert riders’ hands and legs working in a more subtle manner. She’s a very visual learner, and it also helps me to watch them and get feedback about how the horses are going and what we need to do going forward as far as conditioning is concerned.”

In addition to Dunwalke having a successful show, two horses that Humes previously developed did well in the Junior Hunters. Jennifer Waxman, who trains with Ken and Emily Smith, rode Saloon for the win in the WCHR Junior Finals and Sister Parish to win the WCHR Junior under saddle. Both horses were found by Humes and brought along when their owner, Whitney Roper, competed with them and trained with Humes.

“Jen Waxman is such a huge talent, besides being a lovely and kind person. I and many others are always so happy when she wins,” Humes commented. “Ken and Emily Smith are truly brilliant trainers-the legends of the future. They have done an amazing job with both these horses and matching them with Jennifer."

Susie Humes and Alexandra Thornton will show next at the 123rd National Horse Show and Family Festival in Wellington, FL, during the week of November 29-December 3, 2006.
