Catherine Haddad Places Fifth in Grand Prix

Verden, Germany – August 5, 2006 – Big Tyme performed remarkable well to be placed 20th in such a high quality field. This five-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, sired by the thoroughbred stallion Saros xx and bred out of a classical dam by the Hannoverian Wendekreis, had a solid score of sevens and seven-point-fives to finish with an average of 7.26. Big Tyme is very correct in all his movements and was extremely well presented by his owner Marisa Festerling of Newbury Park, CA. Big Tyme qualified for Verden at the Western Selection Trial in Flintridge, CA.
Unitas, a five-year-old KWPN gelding by Libero’s son Niagara, out of a harness horse dam Nellyzora by Harald, demonstrated really good impulsion, achieving an average of 6.78 for 28th place. He is owned and was ridden by Teresa Butta-Stanton of Glen Burnie, MD. Unitas qualified at the Eastern Selection Trial in Raleigh, NC.
In the group of six year olds Brigadier, owned by Deena Smith of Olathe, KS and ridden by David Wightman of Murrieta, CA ended up 25th. The dark bay Oldenburg gelding (by Batido out of the Art Deco dam, Lady Deco) was bred in the United States by Page Hinds-Athan out of Kansas. In Verden, only Brigadier’s canter was rewarded with a 7.0, while walk, trot, submissiveness and general impression all received notes in the 6.5 to 6.8 range for an average score of 6.7. Brigadier qualified at the Western Selection Trial in Flintridge, CA.
In the CDI Grand Prix the American riders performed extremely well. Amidst a field of top German dressage riders, including Isabell Werth who has won Olympic, World and European honors, who won the test riding the 12-year-old Satchmo (by Sao out of a Legat dam). This outstanding gelding, referred to by his rider as a “movement giant” is not always a simple ride and there is often a very fine balance between victory and defeat. On this occasion, the pendulum swung in his rider’s favor.
Second and third place went to Hubertus Schmidt riding Rossini and Private Dancer respectively, while Klaus Husenbeth finished fourth riding Riverdance. For the United States, Catherine Haddad was placed 5th with her Danish-bred Maximus JSS (by May Sherif) and her preccentage of 68.71 was well deserved. Last weekend, Haddad, whose yard is based in the heart of Germany’s Oldenburg breeding district, finished third in the Grand Prix (69.75%) and second in the Special (72.08%) in Elmlohe.
Arlene ‘Tuny’ Page also did well to finish 10th aboard Wild One (67.88 %). Leslie Morse and Tip Top were 13th (66.17%), Heather Blitz and Arabella 17th (65.58%), and Suzanne Dansby-Phelps placed 37th with Cooper (60.25%).
