Catherine Pasmore in USEF/Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal

Tampa, FL – March 30, 2007 – The juniors had their day in the spotlight today at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Tampa, FL, as young riders turned to try their hand in the equitation ring, competing in the ASPCA Maclay and the USEF/Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal classes.

Catherine Pasmore of White Hall, VA, was victorious with her 11-year-old equitation mount Let’s Go M, also know as Go-go, in the USEF/Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal class, presented by Becker College. Although Pasmore, 14, had a fall in the beginning of the season that resulted in her being sidelined for most of the winter, she wasted no time getting back to the winner’s circle.

Pasmore, along with Jessica Springsteen, Hayley Barnhill and Kimberly McCormack, was tested after the first round of riders. The test required all four riders to enter the ring without stirrups and included cantering original fence 6, counter-cantering to fence 7, a hand gallop to fence 8 and trotting fence 3. The final fence was followed by a halt, and riders returned to the line-up at the walk.

Springsteen was aboard Papillon 136 and rides with Beacon Hill Show Stables of Colts Neck, NJ. She was the first to test and had a refusal at the second fence. Barnhill rode next on Regent Park and earned third place. McCormack, partnered with Sundance, finished in second place.

Pasmore rode a competent and flowing test and landed on the counter lead so that she did not have to make an awkward transition. As for the performance of her horse today, she smiled, “He was perfect. He couldn’t have gone any better!”

She continued, “In the beginning of the winter, I fell off my jumper and broke my collar bone, so I haven’t been riding much lately, and when they made us take our stirrups off, I was a little nervous! Thankfully, I wasn’t too loose.”

Even though Pasmore missed out on a few qualifying rounds because of her injury, she is well on her way to qualifying for the four equitation finals. She also noted that she’d like to go to Spruce Meadows as well this year, although her priority right now is qualifying for the equitation finals.

“I was hoping to get to Spruce Meadows this year (for the jumpers). I went two years ago and it was really fun, but I had to qualify for the equitation finals before I went. So, I’m qualified for the Maclay and the Medal now after winning today, and all I have left is the USEF (Show Jumping Talent Search). I need to win one more to get qualified, so hopefully that will work and then I can go to Spruce Meadows for the jumpers.

Springsteen, who was fourth in the Medal, also won the ASPCA Maclay class this morning aboard her own Papillon 136. Today’s victory caps off a season filled with top placings and blue ribbons in both the equitation and hunter rings at the Winter Equestrian Festival.

Rachel Udelson rode Aldebaron Z to second place in the Maclay today, while McCormack took third with Sundance – the second top ribbon for the pair today.

Competition will resume tomorrow morning at the Winter Equestrian Festival at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center in Tampa, FL, and several division championships will be pinned in the hunter rings.
