Celebrations Abound at National Preview

There was much to celebrate at the National Preview (Nov 9-13), with prize drawings on 11/11/11, a huge turnout in the $3,000 USHJA National Hunter Classic and West Coast Pony Finals, and the new Olympic Mix footing in the Equidome.

Throughout the day on 11/11/11, LEG celebrated by holding prize drawings at 11 minutes after the hour all day from 8:11AM to 8:11PM. Exhibitors were automatically entered for a chance to win a LEGIS gift bag, Starbuck's gift cards, free entries and stalls at LEG shows, a table at the LAHJA year-end banquet, memberships in LAHJA and CPHA, and more.

"I didn't know the drawing was happening," commented Andre Barbarossa, who won the first drawing, which was for a Starbuck's card. "It was a nice surprise. I think a Starbuck's card is an awesome prize."

In addition to her prize, Andre is riding a young horse for Martin McAllister Training and won the .95M Jumper class. "The competition has been good," she added. "The new footing in the Equidome is perfect. I love it. The weather has held, and the Subway sandwiches and soups the show put out for dinner last night was great."

There were big celebrations in the hunter ring when Katie Taylor and Small Celebration (Iwasaki & Reilly, Huckleberry Farm, owner) triumphed over 48 other entries in the $3,000 USHJA National Hunter Classic. "There were a lot of high scores and a lot of good rounds and nice horses, so the competition was definitely stiff," Katie shared. "This was my first derby win, and it was a great feeling to win against all those horses and riders. Small Celebration is only five and a pre-green hunter, and this was her second derby ever. She's slowly stepping into the 3'3" classes so she can do 3'6" next year with her owner. This was a really big course for her, and she did great. The courses were good, with a lot of long rides and single oxers. She's got a gorgeous canter, she focuses in well on single oxers, and having the higher options helped show off her jump."

Allon Equestrian awards gift certificates to the highest scoring junior and amateur riders who ride in this very competitive class against the professionals. The Allon High Scoring Amateur was Karrie Rufer, who placed fourth with her My Way, and the Allon High Scoring Junior was Olivia Esse, who placed eighth aboard Valor (Oscany, Inc., owner).

Riders in the Equidome, LAEC's indoor arena, had reason to celebrate when they got to try out the new Olympic Mix footing installed just in time for the show by Rudy Leone. Course designer Peter Grant celebrated right along with them. "I'm very happy with the footing," Peter remarked. "As always, Rudy Leone and his team have done a fantastic job with the mix. The consistency and support it offers the horses has noticeably improved the horses' way of going and quality of jump. The confidence it gives the horses is unparalleled. This is no small investment, and as a course designer I have to say it is nice to be able to work at events such as this where LEG is willing to make the necessary investment for what is best for the horses and sport."

The West Coast Pony Finals will take place over the weekend, and 50 ponies have gathered at LAEC for this celebration of pony hunters and jumpers. Equitation riders also have the LAHJA Junior and Senior Medal Finals to look forward to.

The LA National will be an exciting conclusion to the show season, featuring the prestigious Onondarka Medal Finals, WCE Junior-Amateur Medal Finals, and the $50,000 Grand Prix of Los Angeles (a World Cup Qualifier), run on the new Olympic Mix footing.
