Celebrity/Sponsor Cow Horse Competition at 2008 NRCHA Derby Sponsored by Snaffle Bit Ranch

Byars, Oklahoma - The National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby returns to the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California, June 17-22. In its fourth year at Paso Robles, and with a payout exceeding $359,000, the NRCHA Derby is known for top-notch cow horse competition – but it may soon become notorious for much more. This year, local celebrities and NRCHA Corporate Partners will also get a taste of the cow horse action when they compete in the 2008 NRCHA Derby Celebrity/Sponsor Cow Horse Competition sponsored by Snaffle Bit Ranch, of Lodi, California.

The competition, which was first held in 2006, provides both excitement and no small amount of comedy! There will be five teams, each consisting of three riders – a local dignitary, a media personality, and an NRCHA Corporate Partner Representative. Each team will be coached by a Professional Horseman – top trainers such as NRCHA President Lyn Anderson, and World’s Greatest Horsemen Ted Robinson, Bob Avila, and Russell Dilday have already committed to coach. Not only will their teams get to hear what’s going on – all the coaches will have microphones so that everyone can hear their strategy.

NRCHA Breeder Sponsor Diana Ceresola-Helgesen, owner of Snaffle Bit Ranch, is excited to come on board as the sponsor of this special event which she feels will give new people the opportunity to become acquainted with reined cow horse competition. “We love the idea of having the local community involved in this event. We love reined cow horses, and are very pleased that we get to help share our passion with others,” she noted.

Each member of the winning team will receive a Gist Silversmith custom created trophy buckles, but the Celebrity Cow Horse competition is actually a fundraiser for a local charity of the winner’s choice. Teams will be auctioned off in a Calcutta prior to the event. Competitors are encouraged to have friends and colleagues attend to boost the monetary contributions for their chosen charity.

“It’s great that the money raised will go to a local charity,” said Ceresola. “It’s just another way that the NRCHA can say thank you to such a wonderful and welcoming community.”

One rider from each team will compete in each phase of the competition – herd work, rein work, and cow work. Although it is only required that contestants box in the cow work – taking the cow down the fence significantly increases the chances of a top score.

Already on board as team members are; Debbie Churchill representing Cinch; James Henderson for Nutrena; Chrissy Sheppard representing Gist; Annie Lambert of Performance Horse; and Wayne Hodges, owner of Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions.

The competition will be held Saturday, June 21 from 2-3:30 pm.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
