Dr. Cesar Parra's Grand Prix Mount Cinnco de Mayo Sold to German Rider

WELLINGTON, FL - September 29, 2008 - Dr. Cesar Parra of Performance Farm, a training, coaching and horse sales operation in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and Jupiter, Florida, recently sold one of his primary Grand Prix prospects, Cinnco de Mayo owned by Roanne Denny, to an amateur German rider in training with international rider and trainer Jean Bemelmans.

Cinnco de Mayo is a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding by Coriander out of Ipsa, an Alcatraz mare. When Cinnco de Mayo was foaled, his dam, owned by Lincoln, Nebraska, breeder Mary Wickenkamp, was on lease to Karen Reid of Fox Fire Farm in Fox Island, Washington. Reid, a Holsteiner breeder, contracts semen direct from the Holsteiner Verband in Germany where the sire Coriander is based.¬ Cinnco de Mayo is an American bred and born Holsteiner.

"It's not often that a German rider comes to the U.S. to buy an American-bred horse," noted Dr. Parra, who handled the sale for the owner.

"I'm thrilled. It's the ultimate compliment to an American breeder," said Fox Fire Farm Holsteiner breeder Reid. "Cinnco de Mayo was exceptional from the moment he was born. I knew he was special. I wanted to keep him as my own Grand Prix horse. The Winnetts wanted him for a long time."

Roanne (Winnett) Denny of Wellington, Florida, and her now deceased husband John Winnett, a member of the U.S. dressage team at the 1972 Olympic Games, bought Cinnco de Mayo from Reid as a three-year-old. Roanne trained and showed the horse through Grand Prix.¬ John Winnett died October 5, 2007, at the age of 79.¬ Roanne placed Cinnco de Mayo in training with Dr. Parra in February 2008.

Dr. Parra made his show debut with Cinnco de Mayo at the WEF Dressage Classic in March 2008 in Wellington, Florida, showing the Intermediaire II in the FEI Test of Choice, and earned a score of 74.146%.

On their second outing, Dr. Parra and Cinnco de Mayo competed at EMMA's (Equine Management and Marketing Associates) Spring Fling II in May 2008 at USET Foundation headquarters in Gladstone, New Jersey, and again showed the Intermediare II to earn an impressive score of 77.805%.

After such impressive results in the show ring, Cinnco de Mayo gained the attention of some of Dr. Parra's European friends. One of the interested trainers, Jean Bemelmans, who coached the Spanish team to a Silver Medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and operates Gut Auric outside of Dusseldorf, Germany, scheduled an appointment to see Cinnco de Mayo at Performance Farm in the U.S. on behalf of his student. Bemelmans and his student both tried the gelding. Bemelmans liked him very much and on his recommendation, his student purchased Cinnco de Mayo. The talented gelding shipped to Germany in mid-September 2008.

"We expect big things from them," noted Dr. Parra. "The new owner's plan is to try for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He's a very, very special horse."

Dr. Parra, a veteran competitor at the Olympic Games, World Equestrian Games, and World Cup Finals, recently applied for his U.S. citizenship and noted that he had hoped to retain the ride on Cinnco de Mayo as a candidate for a U.S. dressage team.¬ "The horse loves to work," enthused Dr. Parra. "He developed so rapidly. He had all the Grand Prix movements when I took over the ride, then I solidified the exercises and he began moving bigger and longer. He changed so much in just a few months. He's a super horse."
