Chris Mathews Wins NRCHA Derby Non Pro Hackamore on Ima Chic Please

For Chris Mathews of Santa Maria, California, the first time was a charm. Showing in his very first Hackamore class and going down the fence for the first time at an NRCHA event, Mathews scored 431.5 to earn the first-place paycheck of $1,100.

Mathews has owned Ima Chic Please, a 5-year-old buckskin gelding by Chic Please and out of Smokums Chex Mint, for just six months the same amount of time hes been riding cow horses. But Mathews didnt let his inexperience show as he trusted Ima Chic Please to get the job done.

Hes a pretty special horse, Mathews said after his win. He really takes care of me.

Mathews is learning the event from one of the NRCHAs best. He rides every day with accomplished trainer Sandy Collier, and also has a 3-year-old in training with her.

Finishing second in the Non Pro Hackamore class was Debby Sanguinetti, riding She Aint Plain, by Just Plain Colonel and out of Bexs Leoak Chex. Sanguinetti, from Farmington, California, and She Aint Plain earned $825.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
