Christy Russo Adds Two New Horses to Already Impressive String
Equestrian News Release
Wellington, FL – August 29, 2006 – Christy Russo of Coral Gables, Florida, is only fifteen years old and has already amassed five Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) Circuit Champions and countless division championships at some of the nation’s most challenging horse shows. The young rider competes in the 15 and Under Large Junior Hunters with her horse Westcliffe and has ridden other well-recognized horses, such as The Frog Prince, Lincoln Park, and Miracle. She trains with Ken and Emily Smith of Ashland Farm in Wellington, Florida, and recently added two more future stars, St. Christopher and Tristian, to her line up of top show horses.
“St. Christopher is my new Small Junior Hunter,” said Russo with a smile. “I just adore him and get along with him really well. He is beautiful and so much fun! I actually didn’t even try him,” she admitted. “I got to the horse show in Cleveland, Ohio, and Emily said, ‘Here, he’s from your dad!’ I was so shocked!”
“I later found out that Ken [Smith] saw St. Christopher at the Lake Placid Horse Show, and the horse did really well with Lee Kellogg in the Amateur-Owner Hunters,” she continued. “Ken tried him and jumped him over a couple jumps and just loved him. When I got to Cleveland, I was rushing to have a lesson on Tristian, and they pulled out a black horse- that’s when Emily told me I had a new horse. The next day I had a lesson and just fell in love with him. I have tried so many horses, and every horse that I rode just wasn’t quite right. I can’t believe the one that I didn’t try is the one I feel so comfortable on!”
Russo purchased Tristian after the Lake Placid Horse Show as well. “Tristian is going to be mostly my equitation horse,” she added. “He is a big gray horse and is gorgeous and the sweetest horse ever. I’m so excited to get to know them both.”
“I actually tried him at the beginning of WEF,” she articulated. “I loved him, but Ken wanted me to keep looking around because he was one of the first ones that I tried. I had my heart set on him, so I kept bringing him up. Then I tried him again at Lake Placid, and he was awesome for me. We watched him win a big equitation class with Heather Dobbs, and then we decided to buy him. His name used to be Rascal, but I changed it to Tristian because one of my favorite books is Tristan and Isolde.”
Russo will compete with Westcliffe during the indoor horse shows since she is still getting to know her two new additions. “I am really excited about indoors because there is something so magical about those shows- the rings, the cold weather, the formality. Those shows make fall my favorite time of the year.” She will start competing with her two new mounts before the Winter Equestrian Festival gets underway in Florida to prepare for the 2007 WEF Circuit
